Timing Belt Replacement Time on my 4th Gen

I've got a few miles left before I hit 90K on my 03'. I ordered the parts a few days ago from Jacque and I'm going to tackle it over the holidays. I was hoping someone else may've already done their's and offer some advice. I've done it on my 99' Tacoma and it wasn't too bad. I hope it's just as easy... Wish me luck.

dang you're at 90k already?!?! my truck's been stuck at 57k for about a year now so it'll be awhile before I do my swap. I vaguely remember it being no problems as I've seen the Tundra's get them replaced in a jiffy. Should be easy so long as ya follow the fsm

good luck!

Must be a V8 thing... IIRC they went back to a chain on the 4.0

Yeah, I'm up to 89,6xx already in a little under 4 years. 22.5K mi a year on average is kind of high but it's our primary family vehicle. We've drove from Va to Fl in 3 times, to S.C. 4 times, numerous trips to Hampton Roads area, and it was our daily commuter to DC area 5 days a week. Next to my Tacoma it's been the best vehicle I've ever owned. I've only had to put gas, tires, oil, brakes, windshield, wipers, filters, and normal maintenance parts on it. It's been mechanically perfect and my only complaint is the rear speakers which I've never bothered to fix.

My wife quit working last year and the miles has leveled off greatly. I'm hoping she won't drive it more then 10k miles a year for the next few years until it averages out. Right now my Tacoma is approaching 120k miles and I've been driving it everyday. My round trip is 120mile a day! I really should get a commuter car, but I can't find anything I like. Other then sports cars I can't stand to drive them.

I've got the FSM and plan to follow for the TB..

BTW, how is your ankle?

wow 120miles daily... eek! I'm at 76 miles daily and complain so I can't imagine what it's like driving 120! I hope that's a lot of freeway speed driving vs bumper to bumper funk. You should seriously consider a commuter car! I mean the gas alone will help offset a lot of the cost (then again purchasing a new car would just be as bad). Having a secondary commuter car is good to have on the side. Though I don't have a Toyota as a commuter car, I've got an 00 Accord v6 that drives smoothly and is pain-free in terms of maintenance. Gotta love the quality

Check out the Prius, Camry or even the Lexus IS and GS. Thought it can be expensive, it is in the Toyota family so you can't go wrong. Then again if not a Toyota get a Honda.

As for my ankle, it's coming along. It's in a boot now but by doctors order I'm not allowed to put any weight on it (not like I can). I've got a follow up in mid Jan so hopefully by then things will be good. I hope to be walking by February so I'm crossin fingers

I've actually had 2 commuters cars in the last 2 years but got rid of them because one of them was boring and the other was problematic. I had an 04' Jetta TDI that had tons of gremlins. It drove great and got fantastic gas mileage but I got tired of taking it to the dealer for the same problems that they couldn't seem to fix. I traded it on an 05' Corolla Type S that I got bored with in the first month. I missed the torque from that tug boat diesel in the TDI. My brother's car had just died and he liked the Corolla's so I sold him mine.

Now with my commute I wish I had it or the Jetta again. BUT, I've been afraid to buy anything that I'm going to get bored with in 2 seconds again. I made 2 bad decisions in a row and don't care to repeat so I've sucked it up and drove my 2 trucks.

Good to hear about your ankle. You bring back memories from years ago when I broke mine. Did they have to install any software?

Get a new Camry SE V6!! You won't get tired of it!!
And you'll long forget the torque of the Tdi. It'll throw you back in your seat.

Wow, I'm the low mileage guy I guess. I got my '03 in Feb of '03 and I only have 32,000 on it. I put the first 20k on it really quick, but once I did all my mods, I stopped driving it. I now commute in my '05 Acura RSX. Comfortable, fast, and 34 mpg!!

Beats the 16mpg my 33's gave my 4Runner!

Well guys I've given up before I've even started on replacing this timing belt. I flat out don't have the time between the 60+hour work weeks, long commute, work projects, studying for exams, holidays & shopping, honey do's, and most importantly being a dad... It doesn't look like I will have time until after february but I don't feel comfortable waiting that long to do this job. So tomorrow morning, I will suck up my pride and take my box of parts I just bought to the dealer. They want $400 do all of the work. I suppose that it's too bad considering I purchased the belt, radiator hoses, water pump, thermostat, cam & crank seals, and etc.... Other then the 1st virgin oil change and the sulfur tsb, this will be the 3rd time that it's been to a dealer or had anyone other then me work on her.

Maybe I'll have time my next 90k...
