puff of blue smoke when started 4th gen v8
When i started my v8 04 runner this mourning i got a big puff of blue smoke witch went away after a few seconds. I just cam back from a 2500 mile trip . Yesterday i started it for a minuet just to move it and this mourning the smoke. Maybe somthing to do with just starting for a minuet when cold and shutting of may of dumped alot of gas in and caused it to smoke this mourning. 13000 miles has never used a drop of oil mobil 1 5w30.Any answers out their.

The engine is irreparably damaged. You should give it to me.

If it was runnning only a real short period, could have been some unburnt fuel like you mentioned. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

My Father has the 1st gen LS400 which more or less has the same engine. If you start it for a short time and turn it off--a puff of blue smoke the next time you start it is common--as stated above I think it is unburnt gas......

I may not be an auto genius or anything, but from my knowledge(or lack there-of), oil burns blue, gas burns gray to dark gray, and water/antifreeze burns white.
I personally think it is oil. Why on a 13k motor? I don't know. I do know one thing though.....warranty.

I had a Camry that did that after changing from dino to Mobil 1. The dealership said it was minor leakage from the valve guides and that it was not worth worrying about unless it got worse. It bugged the hell out me...

Ya I have to agree with 88toy in that it sound like oil. I had a 88 chevy pickup and towards the end of its life it had a lot of blue smoke when first firing it up. I was told if was because the valve seals were shot. As for why your new 4runner is doing it I don't know. I would just keep checking it for the next few days. If you see this happen again, well I would take it back to the dealer. I have an 03 w/ v8 and have never seen blue smoke, so I think yours might have a problem.

blue smoke=oil
black smoke=gas
white smoke=water/coolant
Blue smoke right after startup means valve guide seals are leaking. Are you positive it was blue smoke? It could just be condensation burning off, like others have said.

88toy4x4, is right blue smoke is defenitly oil, if it only happend the one time I woudn;t worry about it I would think it would have to do with your long trip, then the very quick one following it. If it repeats check you oil, and return to the dealer for warranty engine work, probably valve guides.

Recently, when I started up my truck it blew out smoke, and im not talking little puffs. It was a greyish/blue color so i took it to my dealer but they couldn`t find any problems(thank god ). That was at the 6k mark now im a little over 8k and haven`t seen any smoke so far (kow). But don`t get me wrong about every time i start her up im looking in the rear view mirror and side mirror.
