Duplicate Key 2003 4Runner

How to program??
(I have the master.)
I found a couple instructions for other models but they did not work.

One had a brake/accelerator dance going on.
The other involved slamming the door like a moron.

Any thoughts??

Thanks.

What is a Toyota Scan tool, how to get one?

I wonder if this proprietary key nonsense has ever put someone off buying Toyota?
I live in an area where we don't lock our doors, heck most of the time my keys are stored in the ignition. Maybe I can remove or disable this part of the vehicle. Think a cow or a deer is going to steal my car?

This issue has been covered fairly extensively in the past, but in a nutshell you have to take the vehicle and a master key to the dealer to add a spare key. The system only allows for a max of 4 programed 'chip' keys at one time. I added a spare to my system several years ago, and it cost about $56., for the key and $25 to program it to the vehicle which took about 15 min. You can get a standard non-chip key cut that will open the door, but it will not start the vehicle. If you already have 4 keys programed into the system, and lose one, you will have to have the missing one removed before you can add another. I am not aware of the ability to disable the chip key system. I suppose you might be able to buy the 'scanner' tool to program it yourself, but I imagine it would be quite expensive. Way more than paying them to do it.

Sorry I guess I entered the wrong text string into the search function because I didn't see the past coverage.
Why do you think a dealer would sell a blank key to me and not mention anything about the need for a dealer to program it??
Thanks.
PS I see the scanner tool on ebay for 1500.00$.

When you say they sold you a "blank" key, did they cut if for you? Or was it really a blank, uncut key? As for why they didn't tell you it needed to be programed, I can only guess that the parts dept wasn't aware it needed to be programmed, or worse they didn't care.

By blank I meant a virgin key. I had it cut.
