4th Gen V6 vs. V8 Track Results
Alrighty everyone, the results are in.
Today Doanlaw (04 v8 AWD Sport Edition) and Myself (04 SR5 4x4 v6) took our rigs to Carlsbad Raceway to run some laps and see just how different these two engine setups run under controlled conditions. I think you'll be suprised, we sure were!
First off we made sure everything on each rig was as close as possible. We removed our Spare tires, took out our SUB Boxes, took anything else out that wasn't bolted down and both ran with under 3-4 gallons of gas in the tank. Note both of these rigs have the Revtek 3" lift kit installed as well.
We ran 3 passes, one with stock airfilter, one with the v8 running a K&N (just to see), and one with the drivers swapped.
I will type out all the details of our first (and fastest pass) and then give just 1/4 mile ET and MPH.
Pass 1: (our fastest)
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD
2.349 ---- 60ft ---- 2.271
6.605 ---- 330ft ---- 6.499
10.140 ---- 1/8 mile ET ---- 10.051
70.03 ---- 1/8 MPH ---- 68.82
15.832 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.836
86.48 ---- 1/4 mph ---- 85.27
Pass 2: V8 with k&n, V6 Stock Air
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD
15.863 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.978
86.11 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.17
Pass 3: Swapped Drivers
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD
15.958 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.907
86.35 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.75
Well, there you have it. Talk amongst yourselves, speculate, etc (I know we have come up with every excuse in the book for why we were faster or not faster on certain parts of the track, hehe) - but the numbers don't lie, these two machines are EXTREMELY close.
Considering this is two different engines, two different transmissions and two different gear ratios, I'm simply amazed. We had a lot of fun and hope these numbers shed some light for both v6 and v8 drivers on what to expect from their rigs.
The best news in my mind is that our 4th gens rock! we run sub 16's STOCK and LIFTED!!! Woo hoo!!

Wow, I'm SHOCKED the V6 & V8 would run the same (practically) as the V8 has a much better gear ratio (drag racing-wise) AND it has another 35-40ft/lbs of torque?.?.? I would have never guessed that. Based on the numbers the V8 would have to weigh another 300lbs or so (more considering the better gear ratio). Very interesting...........
Someone else posted earlier that they had seen the difference between the two and that the V8 was much quicker. But your test couldn't have been any more fair, that's for sure!
My buddy and I will be hitting the local track in Phoenix one of these Fridays to see how a stock V8 4x2 (mine) will run against a TRD Supercharged V8 4x4. He's already run a 15.1 (in Portland). So a 15.1 is about 7 tenths better, which can equate roughly to another 70HP (10hp per tenth). It's tough to compare different tracks/days/temps etc though...
Sounds like you had a blast though!!

Weight is definatley an issue as the v8 is clearly a heavier engine (vs. all aluminum), furthermore we speculated that the AWD is somehow not translating ALL the power as easily as my 4x4 in Rear wheel drive mode.
When we punched it from about 40mph, the v6 would actually slightly pull away consistently (we were both driving the opposite rigs on the way home) and basically I think at those speeds the V8 torque relinquishes priority to the slight extra HP + higher rpms and less weight of the v6.
Once again just ideas

I am too very excited about these results. Thanks a ton for doing this for all of us. Esentially the vehicles are identical in this regard, with the nod actually going to the V-6 if you had to chose a winner...wow!
All in all, as someone else said...4th gens kick ass, period.
Thanks again,
Billy

i wanna see a stock 3.4 (preferably a new one from 2002) vs the v8 and v6 in the 4th gens. i know its gonna get its ass kicked, but the third gens are smaller and lighter... so.... ya

It seems that way based on the "happy zone" of rpms for the v6 ... however, It is VERY close in all regards...

Thats is very cool, I've been extremely curious on how one would match against the other. I would love to test out my SC V8 in the same conditions. Josh, if you set something up let me know and I might come to to SD.

yeah , I would love to see the S/C results, I'm guessing low 15's high 14's? Less weight as well....
good stuff
