so, for whatever reason, I fell like i gotta say hi in this thread. I stacked 2 tb spacers on my 4th gen V8 with the combo of 350hp via 2 nex 10lb regulated bottles. the results have been unreal:

1320 in 4.3 min cause i shot my third rod thru the block

Lol, seriously though, this thread has been EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE as well as educational for us all, and I just wanted to tell you thanks. Have a good one.

Billy

It seems to me that the non-stock tires on the V8 make a lot of the comparison moot. When I went up a small amount in tire height I noticed a huge difference in my trucks acceleration so playing with the gearing can skew the results. Granted I have a 3.0 but its hard to say it was the type of comparison one would get with 2 vehicles off the lot.

We need to see the results of a completely stock V8 and V6. It would really help if we could get a few more trucks involved to see a representative average. Also - no aftermarket intakes, NOS, or other power adders as we need a baseline for the stock vehicles to base mods off of.

My thinking is that you can get more bang for the buck modding a v8 than a v6 and probably better results. In Truckin SUV(Dec 03), they threw an AEM intake on a Sequoia and gained 15hp which they said was incredible for just an intake.
So do you think once the modding starts, the 4.7 would pull way ahead and allow for more improvement?
The stock comparison was very interesting(thanks for the test results!) but lets face it, they will not be stock for long!
Get the 4Runner! If you get the 270hp Acura there is really no point in modding it as it seems the chassis is basically at it's limit with the current engine (sweet engine though). WIth the 4Runner you have lots of potential especially with the V8 as it is AWD (if you get the 4x4), so you have 4 tires to put the power down

If you want to mod the v8 would probably be better as there is more stuff for it (older engine), it also has a 5 speed tranny. (V6 has 4 speed). The V8 can be a lot faster over the 1/4 mile, as it has great torque but seriously lack breathing above 4500 RPM. If you open it up a little bit the torque will improve but you will get a big increase in HP especialy if you get it to breath nicely to 5500 RPM. The v6 will also have potential but I dont think as much, and probably wont be that easy to get the extra HP.

Remember the V8 was derived from the Lexus 4.0 V8 which produced 260HP stock and had 700cc less capacity.

What tires and pressures were each truck using? Is wheelspin even a factor in this test?
I get about 17-19mpg depending on how I drive (hand calcs), wheelspin was not a factor at all - tire pressure was straight from factory (under 5k miles on mine when I ran it). Doanlaw will be able to tell you what his tire pressure was.

I just found this post in my CP and I had to post. I got an 05 V8 Sport. I was wondering about comparing this updated motor with 04 V8. I can tell you this though, with the stock exhaust, this thing makes some very nice sounds, thats for sure, and it really seems to go! Then again, I did have a NA 3.4!
Its not broken in yet, only 600 miles so I really don't know the full effect of the VVTI. And I'm installing the cat-back side exit magnaflow exhaust soon. Should sound very nice!

Neat test, but I'd like to see something more representative of what the vehicles are designed for. Add two or three 200 lb. people and about 300-400 lbs. of sand bags to simulate cargo so you can make the engines work a little.

EDIT: Just realized I responded to a really old thread...d'oh!

Old thread but I can't find any relevant info on what the VVTI has done to the performance. People spend $$ on 35hp. And this same motor puts out 282 in the tundra so I was also wondering what the difference was. Kind of like the 3.4 4runner @183hp v. tacoma@190hp. Maybe a more restrictive exhaust on the 05 4runner v. 05 tundra? That would be nice Doubt it though... and yes I am interested in this kind of performance because this was the only AWD "sports car" that was practical for my situation... yes go ahead...flame on

off to toyota-4runner.org !

I'd be up for a drag race comparison (on the track) in SoCal if anyone wants to put such an event together. My only mod is the magnaflow muffler.

You can also try this forum my friend posts at. www.vvti.net, be ware though, it is a COROLLA forum...but some should know. I think the gist of VVTI is like VTEC for honda...
