315s don't fit 4th gen. lifted 4.5"

Well. I went to Discount Tire this morning with four 315/70/17 BFG A/Ts (measure 34.6" x 12.5") to swap them out with my MTRs. They test fit one on the driver's side front, and --- heartbreak. They didn't fit. I was very willing to ditch the mudflaps, and cut more plastic off the front fender and even part of the bumper ... but at about 1/2 turn, the tires scraped the metal frame. They told me to get a grinder and just cut it down, and I'd have done this, I think, in order to fit them. Unfortunately, they also hit the upper arms. In the rear, they were fine, but the prospect of having to grind the frame AND replace the upper arms was just a cost I couldn't justify at the moment.

My wheels have 4.5" of backspacing, and even if I changed wheels, they'd have the same problem - pulling the tires away from the upper arm would've meant more trouble with the frame.

This all is very strange because Anthony was really sure they'd fit, and he ran these exact tires with less lift than I have, and wheels that brought the tire in a great deal. He didn't have to replace his upper arms, he says, and only had trouble with rubbing in the front.

Mine didn't have any trouble in the front, but all kinds of trouble with the frame and the upper arm.

Just wanted to let you all know, so those of you wanting to jump to 35" tires realize that depending on your wheel, you will likely have to cut the frame, a lot of the fender/bumper, and replace the upper arms. And that is just for on-road, non-articulation/stuffing. So. Just a warning that it'd take a lot of work and money to fit them.

thanks, Lance. yeah ... Anthony's been great and very willing to help. when it comes down to it though, i don't have the funds to justify buying new upper arms and having someone grind the frame.

guess now i'm needing to decide between bfg a/ts in the 285 (measures 32.8x11.5) or the procomp m/ts in the 33x12.5 (measures 32.5x12.5) ... any suggestions?

i might be selling my Inland Truck upper a-arms w/ new f9/11's instead of the f8's that come standard.... also includes new hi misalignment adapters (the old ones got worn out).

i still feel like 35s, even if i got them to fit on-road, would be hell off-road as far as rubbing goes ...

and like i said, i gotta be efficient with my $ as much as possible ... so i'm really leaning toward the procomp mts or bfg ats ... i have my mtrs still, and just wanted something good for when i know i'm going to be stuck on-road a lot ... something that won't wear down fast ... something that still looks/is aggressive. the procomp mts and the bfg ats are both so similar in measurements/cost/size ... it's a rough decision!

Sounds like Anthony must have had a different BS'd rim. One w/ less BS wouldn't sit in as far and then you wouldn't have those clearance issues. Perhaps some wheel spacers?

I don't seem to have any problem fitting my 35s

Sorry to hear about that. I was really looking forward to seeing your new tricked-out truck. It's really weird that Anthony was able to go so much larger.

Since you're looking for on-road tires, wouldn't the BFG ATs better than the ProComp MTs? Don't know anything about the procomps other than that MT designation. Maybe the Toyo Open Country A/T? I think they're about the same price as the BFG AT KOs and they have something like a $100 rebate if you buy 4 by January something.

No, she can't go to a 16" wheel, her brakes are too large.

well you all covered the bases for sure. she cant go to a 16" wheel due to her larger brakes. her backspacing is actually perfect. with the addition of new arms and a TON of cutting, grinding, trimming, etc. my 37's fit just fine now, and i still have a 1.25" BL to add. we have a customer throwing 35" toyo m/ts on very soon, as i will be making the appropriate cuts, etc. the toyo a/t's are also a VERY good tire, but not in the size she wanted. i feel very confident the 285/70R17's will be a perfect fit for her!

If anyone is interested in the 315/70R17's, just let us know. They have about 800 miles of wear on them, are in damn near brand new condition. no white letters...H2 take offs. Also, my konig tremors (17x8) are up for sale as well as a ton of 17" stock 05' tacoma and 03+ runner wheels and tires, just let us know.

I hope this info helps, the 35's can be done for sure, just depends how crazy you are with your grinder.

Anthony

The Toyo ATs come in 285/70R17. The MTs don't, but the ATs do. I was suggesting the ATs since these would be used primarily for on-road driving.
