2008 4Runner engine fan roar
I have a 2008 V8 4Runner with roughly 6000 miles on it. Recently, I have heard what I *think* is the engine fan running at high RPM consistently. I can most notice it when moderately accelerating from a stop. Freakin loud roar in Drive and also when revving in Neutral.
My 1992 4Runner and my 2007 Tacoma both have this ROAR noise when first starting--say in the morning--but after about 20 seconds or so, the fan noise dies down and all you can really hear is the ticking of the injectors. I have always considered this typical behavior.
Any ideas? It is rather hot here in San Antonio, but my 92 doesn't follow the same behavior, and I didn't think any engine could EVER get as hot as the 3VZE. Wanted to get some opinions before I took it in to the dealer.
Thanks for any input!

Sounds like a fan clutch issue. Same thing happened on my 02 Runner, the fan was running at full power all the time instead of kicking in the fan clutch. Cost me $120 and took about 20 minutes to swap out. Of course you should still be under warranty, so make Toyota fix it.

My '03 Runner has done that when the weather starts getting warm, ever since it was new. Lately, we've been in the upper 90's\low 100's here and the ole' fan is starting to make a racket.
I believe this is probably part of the design, where the clutch engages the fan at a lower external temperature than other vehicles. Knock on wood, 5 years in Phoenix heat and I've NEVER gotten her hot.
I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer says "it's normal".
