05+ Tacomas, and mods.. share yours

I am planning to acquire a new tacoma this spring. It will be a sad day to sell my 92, but times are a changing, and the new taco will suit my needs better...

So I want to see new tacos, and what list what mods you have done.

Here is what I plan to do to mine, as soon as I get it.

Oh yeah.. 2006 or 2007 DC SWB TRD Offroad in white (Option D)

Suspension:
Front:OME 885 or 886's, maybe a spacer for 2.5" lift max
Rear: toytec Alcan AAL, probally OME or rancho shocks
Diff Drop: if I spacer it 1" diff drop, if just the coil no diff drop needed

Tires:
265/75/16 BFG Muds. They are 1.2" taller than stock and still let me use chains for snow wheeling and hunting.

Bumper:
ARB Bull Bar, with my XD 9000 winch
Mount up the PIAA lights I already have

Interior:
URD 3 gauge a-pillar pod, with trans temp, volts or ammeter??, and oil pressure
Cobra 75WX CB
Prodigy trailer brake controler

Exterior:
Aux trans oil cooler, if the temp gauge says necessary... the tow package comes with a trans cooler and oil cooler
Snorkel.. if ARB gets one made and diff breather extensions
AmsOil Dual remote bypass oil filter, or dual remote
Flowmaster muffler
true flow air filter
Truck Box in black
On-Board air. Going to keep one of my air tanks and mount to the frame, somewhere Probally going to use a ViAir 400C.

This is going to be the family camping rig

Is it April yet??

I do, I haven't modded mine yet but I am slowly starting to now that it is paid off. If you use 886's I don't think you will need a spacer. People are running 884's with no front bumper and no spacer and getting 2.5" and some are still complaining the ride is harsh.

The route I am taking is this. Tundra TRD Springs (yes the same ones that the 4runner guys are using). These are already installed, I haven't seen any significant lift out of them (.5") but ride much better than the OEM TRD Sport coils ride. For my lift I am going to use the Front Daystar kit as it places the majority of the spacer as a top out and the one that is internal replaces the factory isolator. I don't want to preload this coil much since it is progressive. There are also some aluminum spacers on ebay that are capable of giving 2"-2.5" of lift and the entire thing is a topout spacer. For the rear I am going to run the same toy tec alcan AAL. I will be running 295/70/17 Nitto Terragrapplers on 17" Tundra wheels (they have about 5" of backspacing, according to Donahoe this is the optimum backspacing). I also have a set of Total Chaos UCA's that I bought last March or so from a guy going LT, I hope to not use these but have them if they are needed.

I would consider the 885 as your maximum coil, with the tire size you plan to run you technically don't need a lift at all, that is just my opinion though. My goal was originally to level my truck and put 265's on it but I got a smoking deal on these nitto tires so I am going to run them for now.

TTORA definitely has a lot of good info if you can get past all of the people whining about stuff being posted in the wrong folders, etc...

Yeah I know I wont need the lift, but at 1.75" its not much, and the OME coils will handle the weight better, as well as offroad stability....

Where did you get the 1.75" from? Toytec sells their 884 coils with a .75" lift spacer and calls it a 3" system. So wouldn't that be 2.25" from the coil alone and that is with the shortest coil from the 88X line. Is the 1.75" what people are getting with the 88X and ARB bullbar?

Both toytec and ARB claim a 1.75" lift from both the 885-886 coils, in the propper application. On a Tacoma: 885 stock weight/light load 0-110 lbs, 885 Heavy Load 110-220lbs.

884 is a 4runner coil, for 1" lift no load. 885 is 1.5" for 4runner medium load (winch OR bull bar), and 886 is 3" for 4runner heavy load (winch and bull bar)

There is a difference between 3/4" spacer and 3/4" lift spacer. The spacer on my wifes runner for a 1" lift is about .6"...

The kit I am referencing is here: http://www.toyteclifts.com/basic05.html Part Number: Part Number OME3-05-AL it says that it comes with a "ToyTec Top plate spacers For a full 3" front lift" Elsewhere on their web-site, http://www.toyteclifts.com/spacersoffroad.htm#1spacers, they have "Top plate spacers/studs" that are advertised as "Provides approximately ¾” lift". So something isn't clear. There is a guy on TTORA right now trying to sell his 884 coils that he installed and got 2.5" out of, iirc, without the top out spacers. That is what is throwing me off. Either one of us has bad information or Toy tec sells two different top out spacers. I spoke to Doug this weekend explaining to him what I was attempting to do and specifically asked about top out spacers and he didn't mention any top out spacer to me other than the one providing 3/4" lift. I even stated in e-mail to him specifically about the 884 coils that "Judging by the lifts that you sell i assume that just using this coil would give me around 2.5" of lift" and he did not correct me when he e-mailed me back.

I am not trying to talk you out of anything, just hoping to clear some information up it will help me out too and i could help me determine the spring rate of my current springs.

I have the ARB/OME .pdf file on Tacomas and 4runners, and an email from Dale at Toytec, both state the OME coils are 1.75" lift, on tacomas... the 4runners are what I previously stated. The 884 is also only a 4runner spring as per ARB/OME. Dale told me that with an ARB bumper/winch and 886's I would be lucky to hold a 3" lift with their spacer. And on that page alone they have 3 different heights of spacers.

Here is the linky for ARB
Tacoma
4Runner

Not sure what all the difference is, but its hard to argue with mfgr numbers.

But only one is listed as a top out spacer, which is what is included with the 3" lift containing the OME springs.

The numbers ARB has make more sense based off the spring rate and length of the coil (and my past experience with OME suspensions). I guess I can't make assumptions based off of what is listed on a web-site and pictured in a kit. The one guy on TTORA selling his 884 kit purchased the kit I referenced earlier (3" Kit) and received the 884 coils and a 1/2" thick top out spacer he installed it on his extended cab and originally claimed over 4" of lift, I think he removed the top out spacer and is now saying 2.5" lift. I am trying to confirm that though with him.

Just got this from toytec

The 886 coil should not be used unless you will have a bumper and winch, it is the only coil that is rated at 660 lbs, the others are 590lb coils.

We also do not guarantee any lift figures, or coil settling, nor does ARB/OME.

We have had a lot of experience with the kits and installation with different accessories, and therefore can recommend the best coil for your application.

That was my understanding as well from my conversations with them. That makes sense, the guy on ttora was seeing 2.5" with 884 since his truck was an extended cab.

So far all I've done is added an mp3 player. I'd love some black wheels, but I can't justify that kind of money for a purely cosmetic mod.

I won't be doing any off-road type mods to this truck.
