Thanks

Yea I just wanted a ballpark to know how many to get from the stealership!
The manual says 2 but I thought I read somewhere that it was closer to 4.

Do you have the V6 or V8?

IIRC, the V8's and 04+ V6's are "sealed units" with lifetime fluid, meaning no dipstick for the transmission. You might want to check up on that.

I have a 04 V-6 4-runner. It will take about 4-4.5 quarts. I recently drained my pan. The fluid was a dark cranberry color and was probably fine. I changed this at about 40,000 miles. The hardest part was filling it backup through the dipstick. The Chepo funnel I used had a crappy plastic hose that kept seeping fluid down the side of the dip stick. Maybe it was just me, but after I changed the fluid out the tranny seemed to shift alot chrisper. COuld just be in my head.

Hope this helps

Kinda early for a tranny flush for an '04. You switching over to synthetic?

I'd get 4 (or one or two more than they recommend), that way you have some extra to fill up with later.

The 04 V8 have sealed units, the v6 have dipsticks.

I got this one, new used to me it has 25k but with my old FJ80 I got in the habit of draining the tranny when I did oil changes and because of this I never had to do a flush on it.

I have a 2003 V8 and I most certainly have an additional dipstick (I suspect it's for the tranny)... It's red and it is located near the oil dipstick.

Do Toyota's have transmission filters that need to be changed when you change the fluid ?

no filter to change, actually it is a metal screen that just catches the big slivers of metal. Of course you have to remove the pan to see this screen. I might remove the pan and check the screen at 100k. But for now I will drain the pan every 30-40k. Its so easy and cheap!
