04 Runner Expedition Build Up

Hey Guys,

Well I finally broke down and went nuts with the Credit Card (not really I had to save up per the Boss!!). I wanted to build a decent Expedition vehicle so I purchased the following for my 04 V8 Sport Edition Runner (White):

OME lift - Heavy front, Medium Rear
Shrockworks Front Bumper (powder coated white)
Shrockworks Sliders (powder coated black)
Warn M8000 with synthetic line
Piaa 510's & 520's

I was wondering out of all you guys whom have installed the above, please let me know what to look out for when I begin the install.

Thanks for all the help.

you're gonna have one awesome 4runner!

Removing the xreas is relatively easy to do: just make sure you have all of the wheels off the ground as the xreas is a pressurized system.

1. jack 4runner off the ground
2. remove tires
3. disconnect xreas system (located on the outer section of the frame by the junction box)
4. remove front and rear suspension just like any other setup
5. install ome lift

if you need any help just post a new thread called "wrenchaton in long beach" as we've got a lot of yt members in the socal area that has done the installation you're attempting. i'll come by and try to help but i'm still nursing my broken leg so i'm 50/50 right now.

good luck

Lance,

Your the man. I was definanlty hoping to get your advice. And I might just take you up on that offer. I've done plenty of lifts before, just not one with such a diifficult removal, nor have I installed a bumper before. So Beer and Burgers for all.

My bumper is about 5 weeks out (production time) and the Lift is two weeks out (Shipping I guess)

well if you're not in a rush that'll work to my favor as i'm just starting the rehab for my leg and will be going thru that for the next 4-6 weeks anyway. i'm going to be working on bob98sr5's rear axle at the end of the month so I should be good by then (crossing fingers!)

I just installed almost all of that this weekend although mine is a Taco. (and an ARB bumper). I have done the OME lift on your vehicle numerous times though.
  • Use a high quality spring compressor or have a shop do it. The 885s are strong springs and in my mind are dangerous to compress with hand compressors.
  • Make sure to mark the top plates so they go back on aligned properly with the lower strut mount
  • Remove the lower control arm bolts where the ball joint attaches to the spindle. It makes life much easier. Put thread locker on them when reinstalling. I believe torque is 75lbs.
  • Remove the front and rear sway bars while disassembing. It really does make it easier.
  • watch your rear brake lines while puting in the rear springs
  • When doing the winch set it on a stool or garbage can and have a friend help you lift the bumper onto the winch. This is much easier than trying to attach the winch while the bumper is laying face down.
  • Make sure the spring cups are facing up on the front struts.
  • Leave all the bumper bolts loose until the end!

You can't leave them ALL loose, there's a few that have to be torqued down before the bumper goes on or you can't get a wrench on them. Surf over to www.toyota120.com and you'll find lots of info regarding what you're looking to do.

I would suggest returning the 520s for a set of 580s - they're the same size but put out a lot more light.

Expedition? You're going to want an Engel fridge. And probably a roof top tent!

Hey all,

Thanks for the help so far.

Micdady - I ws planning on disconecting the sway bar and using a bottle jack to push the A Arm down. This midgt be a stupid question but do I need th spring compressors??? Or will the jack be enough to give me the required clearence???

Sincity - Thats what the Adenture Trailer will be for!!!!. Assuming the Boss dosen't cut me off.

You can do the swaybar disconnect + bottle jack method but it's much easier to just remove to swaybar and then disconnect the tie rod. Just rent the tool (for free) at autozone.

sprint compressors will be needed when reassemling the front suspension unless you're purchasing the ome kit w/ the factory top plate already installed (some vendors do this. - Slee Offroad)

If you haven't bought the parts already buy through a vendor that assembles them with new top plates. It will save you hours of work. I am not sure how much more it is to buy that way but it is probably worth it.

I purchased the lift thru 4 wheel parts.(Not sure if that was a good idea). A few other local dealers were $20 to $30 higher per shock and spring. I now for a fact that 4 wheel will not put it all together.

Or I could just have them install it for $290. What do you think.

the rear springs will not be all that hard to do most likely for you, Fronts? I have never put them together myself but I have installed front coils/struts in and its relatively easy (I refuse to use a coil compressor) I guess im a ˟˟˟˟˟. Also with your expedition theme, thought about building a platform for the rear cargo area? build shelves underneath and store lots of whatever and can sleep on top. thats my plan

dude i cant wait to see some pics of this, even though I have a 3rd gen, the shockworks bumper is by far the best looking bumper for the 4th gen and it makes it look super hot!

The rear is a piece-o-cake. For the front just ask your supplier (I used Slee Off Road) to pre-assemble the front struts. That way you don't have to worry about compressing the front springs to get the strut assembled. The bottle jack system for forcing down the A Arm for the install works great. For the 885s I just disconnected the sway bar. With the 886 stiffer/larger springs, I had to disconnect the tie rod ends to get them in. Either way, be sure to get a fresh alignment after you install the new suspension.

If your vender can't pre-assemble you can find a local shop to assemble the struts. The 885 or 886 springs are way too stiff to try to compress in your garage.

Also, I noticed you mentioned 885 front springs. With the Shrockworks front winch bumper (or any other brand) the added weight justifies going up to a stiffer front spring. I upgraded to the OME 886 front spring when I installed my Shrockworks bumper and winch. The 886 spring is a perfect set up for the added wieght if you have the V8. With V6, the 885 might be enough. I'm not sure which engine you have.

Bottom line....your gonna love it!

Since I use my 4Runner as daily driver I looked for another option to support expedition type back country trips. I chose the recently imported King Kamper trailer from Australia. I pick up my new one this coming Saturday. I feel like a kid on Christams eve!

I added the bathroom/Shower addition on the tent for the wife with a Zodi on demand hot water system for showers.

Tucson,

Your right I actually got the 886's. Quite Honeslty I toook your signature to the parts dealer and said " I want what he's got". I have the pics of your rig posted at my desk at work. Great inspiration!!!!!!

Ive really narrowed it down to three "Expedtion Sytle" trailers
1) Adventure Trailer (Awsome traile, but cant walk around inside)
2) Kamaproo (Can walk around inside, but not as robust as the AT)
3) Like you the Kimberly (Super nice but price is the concern)

Also I'm not sure if you've been here are not, but there is a great web site for expedtion travel you ought to check out

Thanks for the kudos. Yep, I found that website as well. Pretty sweet! I agree, the King Kamper is on the pricey side but I quit smoking recently and figured I could use the cig $$ to pay for the new toy. What better motivation to stay away from tobacco!

Plus part of the motivation was to get the wife back out camping again and the fluffy amenities with the King Kamper will do it!

Like you, I studied and learned from many across multiple forums before I upgraded. I have to credit the Yotatech, Toyota-4Runenr.org and the Toyota120.com forums for their combined knowledge and willingness to help others as they pioneered the latest mods.

Let out a yell anytime you have any questions on your new set up. There are many of us always happy to help.
