Why do brakes matter when engaging auto hubs?

So I finally found a front drive shaft just to figure out that my auto hubs are not engaging.
I took out the manual and it said something about brake pads and springs. My pads have at least six months on them and with Christmas just passed, I cannot afford to replace.
So, no ADD, 3.0, 5 speed. I have searched and all the troubleshooting points to brake pads or a spring, why is that? and what spring?
Thanks.

Well your best bet is to start saving your change and find a set of used manual hubs, auto hubs are JUNK and you'll be fighting them forever, it's real easy to swap, I've done it on my old 84 that had non working auto hubs, there are lots of threads on the subject, google it or search it here...Good luck and have fun :}

I have removed the wheels and inspected the brakes, and I have put a rock in front of the front wheels and seen the drivers cv shaft spin and the truck gets stumped, and back wheels spin out. ...

The easiest way to see if the hubs are working is to lift both front wheels off the ground, put the transfer in 2wd or neutral, and turn the front driveshaft by hand. Both hubs should lock. To unlock them, turn the wheel by hand. This will tell you if both or just one are having issues. I have a set of auto hubs you can have if you pay for shipping and handling. I know one of them works fine and the other is "iffy." If you have the extra coin, however, I wouldn't waste my time fixing them. Find a set of factory manual hubs. If you find the hubs, marlin crawler sells a nice set of lock nuts for cheap.

What manual are you reading? Not you're wheel brakes...THE AUTO HUB BRAKES.

Anyways, as stated, it's not worth fixing or replacing them. So just buy some manual locking hubs and be done with it.
