Who's using Toyota filter 90915-YZZD3 on a 22RE?

I picked up a case of ten of these today from the dealer for $4 a piece. The guy at the parts counter sold me on these as they are bigger and made for the V8's. He said he uses them in his 22RE so I figured I 'd give it a shot.

I've done some searching and I know people are using these, but my question is: Do you have to add more oil than the 4.5 qts since the filter is larger? I'm thinking with this larger filter I might have to use about 5 qts. on my next oil change. Thanks in advance for any input.

maybe 4.75 quarts; I couldn't see a filter holding 1/2 quart but I might be wrong; wouldn't be the first time (probably wouldn't be the last )

Yeah, good point. The filter is 27% larger than the YZZD1 and as it is right now I put in 4.5 qts. then I add some more after 4-500 miles, so I'm thinking with these larger filters it'll end up taking about 5 qts.

I use a larger Amsoil filter too since I think they quit making the application-specific one (some lawsuit over a guy who couldn't put his filter on properly). Never checked how much extra oil it takes.

The guy at my local indy parts store sold me on a larger WIX filter #51068. Used 4.6 qts of oil. (Just in case you lose your dipstick)

I run a D3 on my 3vze lol.

Its just a tad longer then the D1 filter (normal) and its the same price so why not run the bigger one.

FILTER SPECS & COMPARISONS

STOCK WIDTH FILTERS - FIT BOTH 22RE and 3VZE:

STOCK SIZE FILTER - SHORT AND NARROW:

Toyota 90915-YZZD1 - diameter: 2.92"; height: 3.38"; volume: .392 quart; media area: 160 sq in; efficiency unknown but mostly synthetic media so probably very good; flow unknown but probably good due to decent media area & synthetic media
Wix 51348 (Napa Gold FIL1348) - diameter: 2.921"; height: 3.404"; volume: .395 quart; media area: 104 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 21 micron; 95% of 37 micron; tiny media area will clog soon leading to bad flow & probably oil flow through bypass valve
Purolator PureONE PL10241 - diameter: 2.98"; height: 3.36"; volume: .406 quart; media area: 107 sq in; efficiency of this size unknown but other PureONE sizes are phenomenal: 5 micron - 51.3%, 10 - 92.8%, 15 - 99.2%, 20 - 99.9%, 25 - 100%; tiny media area will clog soon leading to bad flow & probably oil flow through bypass valve
Walmart Supertech ST 3614 - cheap lousy Champion "Ecore" design - thin felt endcaps separate very easily allowing all oil to bypass filter media. media area: 110 sq in. STP filters also Ecores.

If you insist on using the tiny sized stock filter, ONLY THE TOYOTA HAS ACCEPTABLE MEDIA AREA - THE AFTERMARKETS WILL CLOG AND BYPASS

TALL FILTER, NARROW STOCK WIDTH (fits 22RE & 3VZE - but reports are that the Purolator is a tight fit which means the Wix will be VERY tight, if it fits at all. The Toyota filter is shorter and fits with no problems) To find this size look up the filter for a 2001 Ford Windstar:

Toyota 90915-YZZD3 - diameter: 2.92"; height: ~4.1"; volume: .476 quart; media area: 203 sq in; efficiency unknown but mostly synthetic media so probably very good; flow probably very good due to good media area & mostly synthetic media
Wix 51516 (Napa Gold FIL1516) - diameter: 2.921"; height: 4.828"; volume: .560 quart; media area: 178 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 14 micron; 95% of 31 micron; good flow
Purolator PureONE PL20195 - diameter: 2.98"; height: 4.74"; volume: .573 quart; media area: 213 sq in; efficiency of this size unknown but other PureONE sizes are phenomenal: 5 micron - 51.3%, 10 - 92.8%, 15 - 99.2%, 20 - 99.9%, 25 - 100%; excellent flow

WIDE FILTERS: Fit 22RE BUT DO NOT FIT 3VZE:

WIDE AND SHORT:

Wix 51085 - diameter: 3.660"; height: 3.790"; volume: .691 quart; media area: 172 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 15 micron; 95% of 28 micron; good flow - more volume but much less media area than YZZD3
NAPA Gold FIL1085 - diameter: 3.660"; height: 3.790"; volume: .691 quart; media area: 184 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 15 micron; 95% of 28 micron; good flow - more volume but much less media area than YZZD3
Purolator PureONE PL14670 - diameter: 3.70"; height: 3.75"; volume: .698 quart; media area: 242 sq in; efficiency of this size unknown but other PureONE sizes are phenomenal: 5 micron - 51.3%, 10 - 92.8%, 15 - 99.2%, 20 - 99.9%, 25 - 100%; excellent flow

WIDE, MED HEIGHT (Purolator has discontinued this size):

Wix 51068 (NAPA Gold FIL1068) - diameter: 3.660": height: 4.338"; volume: .791 quarts; media area: est. 211 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 10 micron; 95% of 26 micron; good flow - more volume to deliver same media area as YZZD3

JUMBO FILTER - WIDE AND TALL:

Wix 51515 - diameter: 3.660"; height: 5.178"; volume: .944 quarts; media area: 349 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 13 micron; 95% of 23 micron excellent flow
NAPA Gold FIL1515 - diameter: 3.660"; height: 5.178"; volume: .944 quarts; media area: 337 sq in; efficiency: 50% of 13 micron; 95% of 23 micron excellent flow
Purolator PureONE PL30001 - diameter: 3.78"; height: 5.14"; volume: .999 quart; media area: 400 sq in; efficiency: 5 micron - 51.3%, 10 - 92.8%, 15 - 99.2%, 20 - 99.9%, 25 - 100%; EXCELLENT FLOW
Mobil 1 M1-301 - synthetic media area 356 sq in - good but not great efficiency, but very poor flow.
K&N HP-3001 - resin impregnated paper media area: 362 sq in; - average efficiency; unknown flow (probably better than Mobil 1 but worse than PureONE.)

Note that larger volume filters not only require more oil, but also take longer to fill when motor is first started, meaning the motor will be running longer without lubrication. So it's best to fill the larger filters with oil before installing (but that can be messy).

RECOMMEND FOR BOTH 22RE & 3VZE:

Toyota 90915-YZZD3 - Good media area, probably good efficiency and very good flow, great price ($3.56 at World Toyota of Atlanta or a local dealer should sell 10 for about $4 ea.) Relatively small volume means little delay before oil circulates.
Purolator PureONE PL20195 - Good media area, EXCELLENT efficiency, excellent flow, reasonable price. Probably about the best filter available. Higher (but not huge) volume means a bit longer before oil circulates - prefilling with oil will solve that. Reports are that this filter is a tight fit.

When my current stock of D3s is gone I plan to give the PureONE PL20195 a try.
