Resolved: It was the pinion bearing in the rear differential. Fixed by swapping in a used 3rd member.


I've noticed that my truck is making this sound.

I'd describe it as a vaguely metallic whirring or whooshing sort of sound.

It only does it when i am in gear but not on the gas. If the clutch is disengaged, it doesn't make the sound. If I give it gas, it doesn't make the sound (as far as I can tell. It's possible that other, normal engine noise drowns it out when I gas it, but I don't think it's the case).

I can't pinpoint the sound because I have to be in motion in order to hear it.

I have a 1990 pickup, 4wd, manual trans, 22RE.

What could this be?

 

Does this sound like it could be my input shaft bearing?

 

good possibility, how bads your clutch? lol might as well change er out if you gotta change the imput shaft bearing

 

The clutch is great. Previous owner says it was changed around 20k miles ago and I believe him.

 

well it deff sounds like an imput shaft bearing to me, but maybe some1 els will chime in, but to get it changed out you basically have to do the same thing as change the clutch, (why i was asking)

 

mine does the same thing in my 89 pickup sr5 4wd when im at low speed and when im turning
