where do I buy paint?
I am ready to get paint for the front fenders on my runner - I know that I need Evergreen Pearl paint code 751 - Where is the best place to get the paint. I will be getting the primer/base/clear, but I do not know where to get it -
If you can throw out some store names for me that would be great- I am not thinking the dealership is going to be the best place, is it?

I use local paint supply stores, I really like PPG, dupont and sherwin williams brands. look in the yellow page under auto body supplies for a local jobber. I did a tacoma a few weeks back and it was a burgandy color with pearl in it $545 per gallon so i went with sherwin williams for $155 gallon and it layed down real smooth

KOI, O'reilly, and Car Quest is where I buy my paint. I paint and do autobody (not for work anymore, now just for personal stuff), and have 15 years expirence, but I'm also a computer technician with 23 years expirence !
Are you needing to paint only two fender? Are you painting the entire fender or fixing small damage with little primer? I'll give you some tips if want it... Base coat clear coat is all I like to spray!

Both of my fenders have rust holes in them (approx. 3"x8") so I have two new(well reconditioned) fenders - they are all sanded down to 220 grit right now waiting for primer.
Tips would be good - I have done a lot of forum research and I am planning to do base/clear in order to be able to wet sand any problems that come up.
I have a brand new Devilbliss Finishline gun with a 1.3, 1.5, and 1.8 tips - I know to use the 1.8 for primer and I think I am supposed to use the 1.3 for the base/clears....
I am stuck doing this outside unfortunatly, I have thought about making a 2x4 structure to spray in, worth my time or should I not worry about it?
How much primer/base/clear should I expect to use?
Thanks for the help
Heres a shot of the passenger side(it's the best I have right now) - look at the front of the fender

That's great! my 4runner look just like that, same color, and same rims!
You sure do have a lot of nice toys! I wish I had all stuff you bought in your 4runner quest! I'm trying to catch up, got a long way though!
My reply is really long I'm still writing it.

not just a hardware sherwin williams store but at a auto-body paint supplier my local car quest sell sherwin paints. as corvey said bc/cc is the only way to go. yeah the 1.8 will be good for primer and I use a 1.4 for the base and clear. you can use either the 1.3 or 1.5, the 1.3 sprays slower.

Awesome Highway Thanks a Ton!
Here are my problem fenders -
I also figured out the hard way that not all Sherwin Williams have autobody supplies - I got it straight now though.
I would up with a qt of 2 part primer -
got a qt - 2 part clear coat -
and she mixed my base coat(qt) so its ready to spray
Now I am waiting on the weather to be clear.

i have nothing into the fenders as they came off of other parts trucks I had.
I paid 130 for the gun and all the tips/regulators
I paid about 100 at Sherwin Williams today for paint and rags and cleanup stuff
So i have 230 into my project but I have a very nice HVLP gun to keep for the next project

Can't paint a hot surface....got to be out of the reach of the sun.
Can't paint with a breeze blowing....
Bugs.....bugs....Bugs in your paint is bad..
Run water over the surface to see how it will look with the clear coat on it.
Use PrepAll to wipe the surface right before the painting.
SILICONE is bad news. Will cause little circles in the paint if present.
Clean the gun with lacquer thinner or gun wash well or you will have to junk the gun.
Use good tape.....3M blue is really good. Tan will work.
Never pull the trigger unless the gun is moving a good clip.
Watch the recommended flash times between coats.
First coat is a light tack coat. Its key to preventing runs.
If you use hardener in the clear coat, DO NOT BREATHE IT!
That's all I can think of for now....best of luck. Painting is an art plus
knowing your gun and material well.

Is the green base a metalic ? If so usually the last coat of base i mist it on to level out the metalic flakes. check out this link for a good how-to on setting up your spray gun controls:
http://www.autobody101.com/articles/...%20Atomization
also do you have a water trap on the air compressor ? i use one on the compressor and a small disposable one at the gun as well. just take your time and you will be ok, the very 1st car i sprayed was outside back in 1978 i learned real quick to not do it too early in the morning as alot of bugs were still stirring around around these parts the black toyota i have in the link above was sprayed under my carport (with tarps enclosing in in) and i got a few bugs in the last coat of clear but they all wet sanded and buffed out.

Go to PPG. If you want good results, DO NOT PAINT OUTSIDE!!!. You WILL get all sorts of stuff in your paint(bugs, dust, pineneedles, hair, etc.) Paint in your garage if you have to.
