Question what is wrong???

ok someone please help me. I have a 1991 4x4 sr5 toyota pickup with a manual transmission. every once in a while while im driving it does like this crazy jolt. its so intense that it jolts the whole truck and it is quite scary. i dont hear any wierd noises or anything. the engine light does not come on either. If anyone has a clue as to what this could be then please give me some help. thank you.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th not 1st to 5th, be more descriptive with your problem it would be a lot easier for us to help you out. for all i know you could be describing what could be a loose battery cable to wheels falling off.

ok it happens in 4th and in 5th gears usually above 40 miles an hour. it is a very violent jolt. almost as if is wants a burst of power. I have been thinking about putting a remanufactured engine in it but im not sure yet until i can figure out what is wrong with it first.

Forgiven.
  1. how often does this happen?
  2. how long is this surge? instantious, or lasting a bit?
  3. what happens when you hit the clutch during this surge?
  4. does the truck pull to one side or the other during this?
  5. what engine?

ok ummm i would have to guess that this happens about every 100 miles or so and it is instantaneous....i dont think that anything happens when i hit the clutch....the truck does not pull to one side or the other and the engine is a V6 3VZE 3Liter.

My first guess would be the Throttle Position Sensor malfunctioning. http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/tps/ This could cause the fuel injectors to increase output, but it doesn't fully explain it as you would need extra air too to explain a sudden surge. Kind of stumped by this one.

There was a post a while back about a similar issue, I tried searching but couldn't find it. Maybe someone will find it.

What happens during the jolt? Does the engine rev up on the tachometer? or does the truck actually lurch forward? (you said as if it 'wants' a burst of power???)

If just the engine revs and the tach jumps---could be a clutch going out maybe?
And try as hard as I can, I just can't picture a 3.0V6 'lurching' the truck forward in 4th or 5th gear at over 40mph...they have a hard enough time doing that in first gear from a stop!

heres a start... do a complete tune-up... caps, rotors, plugs, wires, 02 sensor...

it will more than likely go away...

my truck did just as you are describing last year before i did a tuneup and discovered that the PO NEVER did one... the contacts on the cap were worn almost down to nothing...

its funny, because ive heard of this happening quite often with the 3.0s but never with the Rseries motors...

also, have you stared at the check engine light as i jolted?? i didnt because i was scared that my motor was gonna blow every time it did it, but have someone stare at the dash... my girlfriend did and she reported that the dash lights blip for just a nanosecond and then a nanosecond later the truck starts running again...

for those of you who havent experienced this phenomena, its much akin to the feeling of hitting a large pothole at 4mind 5... it just jars the heck outta you...

also, its not the clutch because mine did taht even after the clutch was replaced...

yeah my truck does that when I shift 2nd to third,

Im thinking its the plug wires, o2 sensor or the transmission mount?

As I change gears it jolts back and forth the tach kinda jumps too,

I don't know what could cause this jolt -- I'm not even sure what the symptoms are from the description. But, my wife says that my truck has a jerk in it.

well, the only other thing that i did other than the tune-up and whatnot, was to rebuild the heads bucause the #6 exhaust valve was stuck open...

so, unless you feel like gettin greasy and spendin lots o money replacing head gaskets, then just stick with the tuneup... also, i forgot to add earlier, and i havent done this yet, but it might be prudent to also replace your fuel filter and o2 sensor while your at it...
