What would you do with this 22ret
So I picked up a supposedly rebuilt 22ret long block, harness, computer, turbo, everything from the 4 runner that was related to the engine basically. I was told the long block was rebuilt. The head is clean and looks to have been surfaced and new valves/seals however the block not so much...
dirty oil, scored main bearings, one of the rod bearings was spun, cylinder looks like it was rusted and run at some point though it feels smooth to the touch, one cylinder has a score in it you can just barely feel with your finger...
So do I throw new main and rod bearings in and run it and thrash it or do I find a shop and have it honed and decked and everything else checked out while it's there? More money down the drain I don't have, what the hell.
Here's some pictures to share in my misery.

If it was 2 weeks ago that'd still be an option. Now I have money tied up in a new turbo and exhaust manifold. Not to mention other odds and ends I've been getting together. So I think right now it's either find a shop to repair and build the bottom end or use this as a core for an actual rebuilt bottom end. I believe the only difference in the 22ret and re bottom ends are the pistons and oil supply line for the turbo which I could drill and tap into a regular block. I guess it all depends on the cost factor.

man, that thing just looks like too much of a pain in the but. ill do you a favor and let you send it to me to deal with. ill out it in my 4runner to keep it from troubling anyone else. seriously though, fully rebuild that thing. block, head, pistons, rods, bearings, new everything. i made the mistake of cutting corners and got to pay to build 1 half way mototr and one nice motor. do it right the first time.

where were the thrust washers supposed to be in these engines? I just realized I didn't find any when I tore this thing down. I'm wondering if that's part of the problem and weird crank/block wear you can see in some of the pics.

gonna take it to the machine shop friday and see what they say. Is the only difference in the re and ret blocks the provisions for the oil lines to the turbo? same otherwise? same crank, rods, different pistons? I have another re block that's probably in better shade which I could drill and tap my own oil lines in if need be.

I pulled a part my 87 non turbo block.
This is the spot on the turbo block where it was run without a thrust washer.
Here's the same spot on the non turbo block which still had the thrust washers in place.
Cylinders look a hell of a lot better on the non turbo as well.
I'm probably going to end up using the non turbo block at this point and drilling the oil feed.
