Years ago, (2005). I joined YT when I purchased a 1st gen 4Runner. I did the prerequisite introduction post. Well a lot has changed since then. I moved to Houston from the Boston area in 2006, had to let go of that original 4Runner that inspired me to join YT. I never owned another 4x4 since then....till now. My father bought a 1993 4x4 xtra cab Pickup brand new in September of 1993. I was 13 when he brought it home from the a dealer in Raynham, MA. I kinda grew up in that truck, it was one of the first vehicles I drove when I first got my license. I later moved out and got married, my father moved to Puerto Rico in 2001 and had it shipped there. It served him well living the rural island life. A few weeks ago he decided he wanted a newer car but couldn't keep his truck also. So in a bit of nostalgia I offered to pay for the shipping to the mainland and help him towards the purchase of a new car. I'm excited to be getting this truck as it holds a lot of sentimental value to me. It has very well cared for and only has 120k miles. While I'm no longer an assistant parts manager at a Toyota dealer, I work for Lexus now but still have access to Toyota parts and expertise at good prices. I hope to fix the little things that 24 years of age warrant. The truck has been left at the port today, and I hope to pick it up in Florida later this month, and drive it back to Houston. Can't wait.

So I picked it up about 2 weeks ago. It was so cool to the the truck I grew up with for the first time in about 8 years. I had to drive it from Jacksonville to Houston, stopping overnight at a cousin's house in Mississippi. The drive back was uneventful, but I knew the truck was going to need some attention once I got it home. It was getting bad fuel economy (16-17mpg), check engine light was on, the brakes pulsated like crazy and it had a bunch of little things needing work.
OK so once I got it home, and a tech and I got a good look at it, we started wrenching. The list is as follows:
Full tune up
Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter
Oxygen Sensor
EFI system cleaning

Windshield washer pump
LR Mudflap
LF seat recline handle
Shiftknobs
Wiper blades
AC evac and recharge
Balanced the tires

All new front brakes
4runner calipers, rotors,
new hoses
grease seals, repacked bearings

Brake system flush
Diffs, trans, and trans case fluid changed
engine oil changed
Power steering fluid flushed
Coolant flushed

New rear shoes and drums
new efi temp sensor

stuff needed
new tie rods and alignment
rear pinion seal
pass front axle seal
new shocks(I have some Rancho RS5000's, don't like them)
new tires to go with some wheels I got
Tint windows and some other misc stuff
I have a bunch of stuff in a box that I need to install one day
(timing chain setup, TRD cam, etc.)

I love this truck, for sentimental reasons. I hope to get the mechanicals done and start maybe restoring the body

 

Do any of these things address your CEL?

 

Nice truck and great story! Looks like your dad took great care of it.

Oh and sounds like you have access to some Lexus techs...lucky you.

 

The CEL code was for the oxygen sensor. Yep, no more CEL

What's there to restore? She's shiny like new!

 

It is good condition considering the age and where it's been its whole life but it does have a lot of dents, dings and scratches. It also has been overloaded at some point and the drivers side bed wall is bent away from the tailgate a little. Also has a rust spot by the exhaust on the bed. I also want to get rid of the visor, and weird hearse handles my father installed years ago lol

Its lookin good. I like the sun visor for the windshield. Your neighbor looks like theyve got a couple yotas as well

 

If you pull the sun visor for the windshield, it's a Lund brand and it has the desirable lights in it. It has a fair value, somewhere around $200-250. If you don't want to deal with shipping a huge object like that, just the light caps have good value (out of production last I checked).

I've seen a few Toyota's with those cab grab handles, seems like it was fairly common on the 1 ton and camper models. Not sure if it was a factory/dealer option at the time, or just people just happening to install the same brand of part.

That O2 sensor would likely be the main cause of the poor MPG, hopefully you're seeing 20s+ now =).

I parted out a truck that looked exactly like yours except rotted out and passenger door was caved (broke the glass and all). I pulled up a pic of it, and the stripes are extremely similar but backwards lol. Pretty sure it was a 91.

I'm waiting to bite the bullet and get all the body work done. When I do that the handles and visor are coming off, as I have to fill the holes that would be left behind. Yep, same truck pretty much.

Interior looks pretty good. I did notice it has non factory shift knobs, were you planning to put them back to factory, or sticking with the aftermarket ones? Don't really see anything else out of place .

 

I still have the factory knobs, just liked these simple ball shift knobs.

 

save the visor. or put it up for sale here. a lot of people hate them, but to the ones who love them, those things(with the integrated lights) are gold.

 

When the time comes to remove it, I will save it. It does have one lens broken, but it's in ok shape being 20 + years old.
