I took this thing off my crossmember on my 1995 pickup 4x4 short bed standard cab manual 5 speed 22RE many years back and I’m wondering if anyone knows what it’s for??? Maybe the crossmember was swapped in by PO? Who knows, but it’s interesting and I came across it in my parts box today and thought I’d ask, finally.
Thanks YT
My WAG is it addresses some sort of creature comfort vibration Toyota engineers found. A weight to change how vibrations travel along/through the frame.

Not necessarily a 'creature comfort' issue.
Some harmonic vibrations can eventually fatigue and destroy mechanical components if not damped.
Hey thanks for the ideas. I would agree with all of these. My initial thoughts were some sort of vibration damper. I found it bolted up inside the crossmember with two m8 1.25 bolts. The rubberish looking square piece fits up inside the crossmember and had nothing bolted to it at all. And that particular piece is rather hard, even harder than a hockey puck. Of course, this was after years of aftermarket exhausts and systems etc that I found it. So something could’ve been there at one time. I suppose I’ll bolt it back it there and see if there’s a noticeable difference. Oddly no one else has mentioned the existence of it on their trucks. This California emissions truck also has very peculiar leaf spring brackets that are indeed factory, yet I’ve found just one other truck on here mentioning them. The brackets are also in my factory repair manuals and labeled in the diagrams. I’d love to be able to replace the rubber in those from Toyota. I used a hard rubber sheet and cut new ones awhile back when doing the leaf springs and shackles. It wasn’t ideal but seems to be holding up.
