in college we dissasembled a Porsche variocam boxer motor which had a severely bent valvetrain, and we did it all with no specialty tools. this was by far the biggets PITA i have ever experienced in my automotive carreer and took us far longer than it should have. before putting the heads back on we left a note ontop of the piston in the #1 cylinder that simply said "welcome to hell" hows that for finding something pleasant lol

 

Put a voodoo doll complete with stick pins in it just before you sell it. Have the buyer's name on it.

 

So I finally pulled the engine out of my truck, getting ready to drop my rebuild in
Have to use the old pan because the new one is cracked
I drop the pan and the entire timing chain guide falls out, in 3 pieces
I halfway expected it, and I'm sure its real common, but I had to laugh...

 

Even the name Ford doesn't sound fun- it's a drug rehab clinic.
Jeep aint so bad- the old popeye cartoons had that little 'jeep' character so I can see the fun there.
Chevy? hmm.. sounds too much like 'shove me'.
Toyota has Toy in the name so it has to be fun.

gonna try and resurrect this thread because this is what i found in my gf's oil pan today:


wtf is that? should i be concerned? i'm pretty much a mid-level noob when it comes to wrenching and i'm wondering if this is something i need to get professional help with.

her truck is a 93 ExCab P/U with 22RE, manual condition

i'm re-doing the gasket, replacing the radiator and rebuilding the power steering pump (oh yea and fixing a pinion seal). Other than those minor things, the truck runs really well, she says the PO had the engine rebuilt at around 100K and now has 187K. i'm replacing the radiator cause it's old and was losing coolant (i think it's one of the hoses). here's another pic (see the clip?):



if anyone has any insight, it would be appreciated.

I would assume pieces that large should be easy to find the source.

They look aluminum so that should narrow it down.

Timing cover?

it's running smoothly and the 22re rattle isn't even as loud as my truck's one. i'm going to assume that it's ok for now.

Looks like pieces of the timing cover. I found pieces or chunks of the plastic timing chain guide in mine when I replaced the timing chain.

 

yup every truck i replace the guides and find plastic in the pan
