what gets sealed?
doing reassembly on my 22re rebuild and wanted to know if anyone else uses rtv to seal the water pump with the gasket also, the timing cover to the block with the gasket, and the oil pump to the timing cover with its gasket, the FSM says nothing about using rtv when installing these, but I have searched and some people seem to and some don't. Just want to know whats the best way to go.

i used it in all those places, except the oil pump, it has a rubber o-ring type gasket.. and my motor doesnt leak at all. . i also dont use the oil pan gasket on the late model 22r's, just permatex black sensor safe.

Ok, so heres my experience.
I don't use RTV on the waterpump, just the gasket. The two times I've used RTV as a dressing (like you normally do on everything else) I've had the seal bust out and leak. I think it's because the water pump isnt torqued on extremely tightly and the RTV with the gasket just puts to much space between the mating surfaces and under pressure, its to weak to keep from blowing out. Never had a waterpump leak not using RTV.
However for everything else, use RTV and the gasket, not much RTV, just enough give good coverage so the gasket mates properly and seals up good.
I've also had success with the cork gasket and RTV on the pan, never tried just using permatex or rtv alone.

I use Permatex gasket eliminator, extremely thin as a gasket dressing.
I use FIPG at the timing cover to head seam, cam plug bottom, and oil pan.
I never use silicone, seen too many Toyota engines plugged up with it.
The oil pump o ring gets vaseline.
