I have a 86 4runner with the 22re motror 5 speed i have 33s on it now and its boggish on highway hill well you all know how a 22re is lol But i want to go with a 38 in tire and i need to know what would be my best bet

tbh once you go that big i think it should be trailered, but the lowest gear would be 5.71's but have been known to break when under harsh off roading conditions. so 5.29's are the next ones.

A) you need 5.29s if you plan to do any offroading ... if you don't, you can get 5.71s, but there's a debate on whether they are strong enough...

B) swap in a bigger engine

C) are you going to run 38s on IFS? that's alot of stress on IFS.....hope you can change a CV axle fast...


*edit*....I agree, with 38s and a DD not mixing. I ran 37s on the road for a while. They suck. You really have to slip the clutch a lot and gas mileage kills. and on top of that you really need larger than 15" rims for that size tire on road. The sidewall will rock/distort on the highway and can cause a death wobble.

38" tires are overrated. I ran a set of 38x14.5x15 SX's on my 87 22RE/A340H and then 37" MTR's, and now I am running 38x12.5x15 TSL's. BTW I have 5.29 gears and it works great. I am now running the MTR's on my 94 3.0 truck with 5.29's but I am going to a 98 2RZ engine and dual cases as well.

5.71s are no weaker than 4.10s dont even worry about that. As for gears. Definately go with 5.71s if you are planning on keepin the 4Banger.

It seems to ME that your jumping into this to fast. First tell us some info. Why do you want 38s? How often do you wheel, and what terrain? With these answers, we can better answer your original questions

If you keep the 22RE I'd go with 5.71's. I have 36's and 5.29's and it's perfect. I could still turn a 38 but it will slow it back down some. If I were doing 38's, I'd do 5.71.

As already mentioned 5.71's are fine to run if they're set up correctly. Box up your 3rds and send them to Zuk. He'll be starting work again shortly as it cools off.

If you do the 302, I don't think I'd change the gears. I might run dual cases, but I don't think I'd change the gears.

yea, with a motor swap, 4:10s will run the 38s good. I have the buick3800 with MINOR motor work, and i can spin 38s on the street I'll be running 36s though. OO and im still rockin the 4:10s. More HP/output and you dont need deep ass gears.

I've been running 5.71's for 3 years. I have broken both birfs and replaced with longfields. I also have aisin's (much stronger than warns) so in theory my Ring and Pinion are my weakest link, and yet they STILL have not broken? Why? Well5.71's in fact are not much weaker than 5.29's... They were also heat and cryo treated...

if i had a long wheel based toyota, i would just do triple cases and keep 4.10 gearing in the diffs for strength with heat/cryo, and 42's.

by the way, just go with the 5.29's. 38" super swampers are really about only 37" or so. who needs the top end in 4lo, anyway? it will be fine on the street, you might feel a tad slow but its a wheeler who cares.
