What exhaust for a 22re?

Can? lol. A trash can. And throw the can style ricer muffler into it.
We dont roll around all riced out here.
Typical 22re exhaust would consist of a nice lce engineering header. (no cheapie pace setter junk, with leaking flanges)
Then go 2 1/4 inch pipe back to a cat or not. I chose no cat, as I can get away with it here. For my california over regulated brethren...a nice aftermarket cat here will work. Make sure it is approved by the smog Nazi's.
From cat to muffler...2 1/4 inch pipe. Muffler....you could spend a bunch of money here. Or not. Doesnt matter. Its a damn 4 cyclinder. I kept the factory style log muffler that was on mine. It was new still.
All this....sounds great. Performs greats.
No need for bigger than 2 1/4 inch pipe. Would just be a power loss. Skipping the cat is kind dicey for some people...may get you a ticket...but if you do not go around smarting off to cops being a little punk...you prolly have no worries. You are doing your green part for the world just by keeping this ancient toyota beast on the road. SO dont get all environmentally conscious on me.
You could go buy a 300 muffler that says magnaflow. OR bassani. or some other fancy name that sounds cool and givesa you a cool sticker to put on. You will more than likely bash your new muffler of a rock or root and smoke it eventually anyways.
Sound....mine with the lce header...no cat...2 1/4 pipe and log muffler...sounds good. No ricey sound. Little on the deeper side. Like 1/2 a v8 with my little cam lope from the engnbldr 268.

I 98% agree with HighLux. The only thing I can think of is to use a slightly smaller diameter tailpipe than the midsection. In reality it won't make much of a difference but it will help the torque curve. If you are having a shop do it why not, it would probably cost the same price.
On a stock ride I'd go 2-1/4 from the header and all the way to the tailpipe, then I'd go 2". On a all-the-bolt-on's setup with a cam I'd go 2-1/2 with a 2-1/4 tailpipe.
Reducing the diameter of the exhaust gradually from the header outlet to the tailpipe preserves the exhaust gas velocity. The exhaust cools at it travels and reducing the diameter maintains the velocity. This keeps the torque curve where it belongs.
But again, probably wont matter when you had 109hp from that factory and half that 30+ years later.
