First toyota and its stuck in 4lo
Hello first of all this should be my first post of many on this forum. I found it while researching and decided to join. I have always had jeeps, the other day one of my friends asked to borrow my trailer to pick up his 4runner which was stuck in 4lo. I have always wanted a first gen 4runner so I asked if he wanted to trade for an f150 I just finished building. He said yes so we swapped, I got the title and am now researching what is going on. What I know about the rig is that it has a 22re an auto with an id tag that reads 3030le. The transfer case is a side shift ? I have found some people say the tcase is married to the auto. This case doesn't appear that way? I want to pull it but I do not want to screw up anything at all. There is also a positioning sensor that bolts on the shift linkage coming out of the side of the tcase. This was dangling down when I got it. I put it back on but it made no difference. I've got the case to disengage once or twice going from reverse to neutral then drive ect. It just pops back in on its own. My plans are to keep the 4runner stock run 31s and daily drive it.

I did the same thing when i first bought a yota. To fix it stick it in reverse and roll back about 10-15 yds then put it in 2-HI and drive forward. Should be right as rain. As I understand it there is some kind of spool in the 4x4 tranny that keeps in engaged.
If that doesn't work there may actually be a problem, and I'm not the person to help you there as I haven't touched my tranny yet.

Well I drove in reverse and then forward moving the shift lever in different positions. It still did not disengage, I locked the hubs in tried the same thing and it did disengage. I Parked it then about an hour later went back out to mess with it, Started up great threw it in reverse and it slipped back into Lo, with the shifter in 2hi. I checked the linkage it seems tight a little wiggle but not enough slop to go from 2hi to lo on its own. Then I put the hubs in drove around for a while trying to disengage it and finally it came back out. I'm thinking that this is a shift fork inside the transfer case.
I really need to find a site like novak for Toyotas so I can find out what kind of tcase I actually have, that way I could do a lot more research. If I could i.d. the tcase I will order a rebuild kit for it, or if it is part of the transmission I can replace it. Thanks for all the help.
