What to do...

Hey guys I'm kinda new on this site and posted a few times and your input on my thread helped a lot! Thanks...and I'm sorry if its been asked before but I'm at a complete holt with my 4runner.....I wanna get it running "officially"again...

My problem is the engine runs but it's leaking lots of oil and I mean lots...it's leaking from the engine the gasket I believe, and I noticed the main leakage is coming from the oil pan(one of the rod or tube going from the engine to the oil pan)...I got pics but can't seem to figure how to post..photobucket??...any ideas on the leak??

Second problem.....making a ping sound from the engine...no idea..

And my last question is if I wanted to do a swap...what engine would be best for it...it's a 91 runner and I believe it has the 3vz engine....

Sorry I'm not very detailed about the issue...still new at this 4runner....thanks

Learn your way around these vehicles .

Your no way ready for a swap at least for a while

Try to figure out where the oil is coming out with the fan blowing it all over the place it can be a challenge.

I am unfamiliar with the 3rz, but the way I am taking your post I feel you might be in over your head with a swap. I would be uncomfortable doing a swap my self. You see alot of doing the 3.4 swap into a 3.0 and I try to mention that even though the 3.4 will bolt up to the tranny and engine mounts, you still have some metal work to do to get the exhaust and sure there are other things that need fabbed.

The computer also has to be rewired to match. I have never done a 3.4 swap so even some of the info I just posted may not be accurate, but it should start to give you and idea of what is involved in doing any kind of swap.

You may be more mechanically skilled then what I am sensing and I also believe where there is a will, there is a way, so I am not completely trying to talk you out of it. At very least, be prepared to buy an entire donor truck. Piesceing it together out of a boneyard or elsewhere will add to cost tremendously. Under Forums, then Offroad Tech is all kinds of different swaps available, start going thru others threads and seeing what they went with and some Do's and Dont's. Others have already blazed the trail for you and several would be glad to answer any questions and suggestions about what to do or another swap they might have went with.

As far as your oil leak, give the engine a good scrubbing, being careful not to get your distributor and electronic components wet and keep an eye where the leaks are coming from. Some might be easlily fixed and then others may need some serious time to get at or to take parts out of the way to access.

Pinging could be anything. You will need to give more details. Something rubbing, needing adjusting, timing,???

Thanks guy.. I was planning on taking it to a shop to do the swap...I know for sure I can't handle this project...but the oil leak is coming from the rod from the oil pan to the engine...started the car today and saw a big pile of fresh engine oil on the ground...as for the pinging...I read a couple post in here with similar sound...so I'll just try to narrow it down....the think is I'm not familiar with this engine..

are you talking about the tube that holds the dipstick to check the oil?? if so, push down on the tube and set it back into place. if not, please figure out how to post pictures, it is much easier figure out what you are talking about. get a photobucket account. upload the photos to photobucket. then copy the img code to this thread

Looks like your oil filter is loose have you tried to tighten that.

That will push out major amounts of oil.

It might not be that the oil filter is loose, but maybe the o-ring on the filter itself. Pick up anew filter and give it a shot. Otherwise, I'd agree it looks like the dipstick tube might be leaking. Like the previous poster said, try pushing it down into the block.

Tapped it....it's seemed tight now but the main leak was coming from the area of the transmission....is that possible??? I had my transmission replaced in the beginning of the year and could it be that they did a poor job and didn't seal it up properly??? And it does seem like I'm missing a few screws from the transmission....

The oil pump is mounted on the front of the block, the crank goes through it. It isn't an easy thing to get to and replace. Requires removing the crank pulley, and everything up to it.

If it is leaking from the rear of the engine, it is more than likely the rear main seal, not the front.

Before you go much farther, get some spray engine degreaser and a garden hose. Get the engine clean enough to eat off of. As others have pointed out, just the fan will blow oil from one end of the engine to the other. And gravity is not your friend; lots of people think they have a bad rear seal and it turns out to be .... a valve cover gasket.

Once the engine is sparkly clean, start it up and look carefully.
