This dimmer switch was in my 88 4runner. My dash lights don't work so I am guessing this isn't the correct dimmer. I bought the car used and I have finding a ton of bugs.
88 4Runner. 22Re? 3.0? Where is it connected to? Where on the truck did you find it? We could be thousands of miles away. Please help us see what you have right in front of you.

I have the 22re. This is supposed to the dimmer switch for the dashboard. Mine is under the steering wheel it's located where the hole is.

I do not remember what the variable resistor looks like in the back, but the knob looks stock.

Yes, the dimmer mounts in that hole ^^^
I suggest you look behind it and see if the connector there mates with your variable resistor.
If it does:
1) We need to verify that wiring is stock based o schematic below, AND
2) We need to check if your variable resistor is good.
