Weird hot start issue.

So I have a weird hot atart issue. Only happens if I drive for at least ten miles and shut it off for about 5 mins. If I just shut it off and right back on it doesn't happen. Wait 20-30 mins it doesn't happen.

Start it after sitting for a couple mins and it idles really low(~400 leas rpm than normal for a warm start) and has a tick. Low oil pressure on the gauge, never tripped a oil light or cel. No codes stored. Romp the throttle to 3k rpm and its gone. Isn't rich or lean when it happens. No vacuum leaks, great compression, and only does it if its sat for just a moment. Any ideas? Cleaned the tb, iacv, checked all vacuum lines, checked the engine temp with an IR thermometer (~189°) if I remember correctly at the thermostat. I'm kinda lost. Doesn't make sense to me. Any help is amazingly appreciated. It's done this since I got the rig, about 4 months ago.

i had the exact same issue with my 95. It happened after I bypassed a vsv that broke. the dealer wanted 160$ for a new vsv so I passed. It never effected the drivablility so I just lived with it. I think the vsv had something to do with hot starts.

What is a vsv? I have a 22re not 22rec, even though I am in California.

Could it be a tps issue? Cause every time you go key on, the tps learns the idle position. I don't know just a thought.

I think hambob has it; this sounds exactly like your Fuel Pressure-Up is not working.

There is a VSV http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...ne/41fuelp.pdf that opens the Fuel Pressure Regulator vacuum line to atmospheric during starting under warm conditions. This raises the pressure in the rail, to overcome vapor lock (which is what I think you have). The VSV is located on the right apron in a 3VZE; to find it on your 22re you just need to trace back the vacuum line from the FPR.

I'm going to bet it's a dealer item. When you get the part number, let us all know; hambob might be interested.

Probably "No. 3," but you'll need to trace your vacuum lines to the FPR

With truck warmed up and idling at normal speed, I pulled the vacuum lines from vsv and didn't make much of a differance. Connected them to one another, an sidle increases. What's this mean?

My first guess is that your VSV is stuck open, applying "zero vacuum" (atmospheric pressure) to the FPR all the time. So the fuel rail has "too much" pressure, and you're idling rich. What happens when you connect the two vacuum lines together? The vacuum on the FPR reduces the rail pressure, bringing the mixture closer to where it should be. Which will increase the speed.

Of course, I wouldn't have to guess if you had done the tests shown in the FSM. Why don't you try that? The replacement part is around $100 (which says "junkyard trip" to me).

I don't have an fsm. When I connect them the idle increases about 200-300rpm, when I leave them alone, while disconnected, idle drops about 100rpm.

No FSM? Come on RylerTust, ya gotta read the stickies!

I already gave you the link to the part of the FSM with the VSV test.

Here's the rest of it. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/

Can't find anything on the vsv in there. Found it in my Haynes manual. No check procedure though. I'm looking at it right now on te link. Also more problems a raised. Throttle is sticking cause of dash pot, how do I fix this? Can I remove it? And I'm getting a weird misfire. Possibly related? Still no cel codes.

Vsv appears good. All tests were positive except I didn't try the one with te battery. Didnt wanna arc and mess things up. Idle was the dashpot, so I just backed off that grub screw so it didnt touch it anymore so now I gotta be easier letting off the throttle, no biggie. I baby this truck anyway unless I'm in the dirt. Misfire was a bad plug wire I think. Still have the start up issue though. Any more ideas? Read the pcv and grommet could cause it too from left over pressure in the cover or something. Mine was cracked so I changed it and no luck. Any more ideas guys? Thank you all so much for the help so far. I really appreciate it. You guys are awesome. I'm still new to these things. Love my yota. And aside from a couple hick ups, it's been an amazing vehicle so far. I see more every day why people go to a toyota an never go back.
