weird hesitation/power surge while driving

94 pickup 22re 130k 5spd.

so the past few days it seems like while im driving to work the truck drives fine, and runs smooth, but sometimes it almost feels like it grabs quick or hesitates and then is fine again. it almost feels like when you hit a really strong headwind. it only does it for like 1 second at a time, its not like its dying or sputtering, just getting that feeling for short times. other than that the truck runs fine.

timing is set perfect, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, fuel pump, pcv valve, and ran seafoam in it in the fall.

thanks guys

Could it be that you are actually hitting a headwind?

Mine was doing something similar... turned out to be a bad spark plug but sounds like you've already ruled that out.

Mine was doing this, mostly on the freeway when accelerating and going up hills. Turned out to be the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).

The test is if you short out the terminals (the ones you use when setting the timing, can't remember which ones offhand) and your idle does not drop, then your TPS is bad.

Good TPS guide here:

I have the same thing. I noticed when I remove the vacuum hose to the EGR valve and plug it the surging stops but then I get code 71.

hmm. i was thinking probly tps or egr needed to be tested/fixed. i am probly going to do the egr delete because i dont have emissions, and i dont have a light anyways. it never ever has come on even when just turning the truck to the on position. maybe a bad bulb.

22re surge/hesitation/jerking

I have a 92 regular cab 2wd 22re that has a similar issue. Upon acceleration it will sometimes violently surge and jerk like it lost all fuel pressure. At times I can drive 50 miles without these symptoms and sometimes I will have these symptoms for 50 miles nonstop. I think I have rules out the TPS because it will have this issue while that sensor is unplugged. Iv'e looked at checking the resistance for the TPS per the 4crawler website but im not sure if i'm doing it right or not. It has new wires, denso plugs, new distrubutor cab and rotor and a new fuel filter in the last 3K miles. I will be checking the fuel pressure tomorrow to see if its within specs. Also it has no check engine light. Are there any sensors that would not cause the check engine light to come on? Oh I've also cleaned the throttle body and put a new gasket on.

It sounds like spark issue. When its really dark out run the engine with the hood up and check for an arc between the plug wires and any metal. If no, check the plugs, cap and rotor and rotor shaft contact very closly for any tiny cracks or black lines. with the rotor off grab the shaft for side to side play. Look at the cam sensor pickup and tips for damage or debris...if you do confirm its a spark issue and you cant find anything, they have ignitor issues.
