weird cold start injector voltage
1986 22rte
I have had a cold start problem for a while now. See post #3 for symptoms
Today I did some tests. The CSI is only getting around 4volts while cranking... there is something seriously wrong here me thinks....
...im not that great at wiring problems lol
both the cold start injector and the time switch check out fine according to the FSM and I have replaced both just to be sure....no change
UPDATE:
Ok. I finally got some time and help when the truck was cold.
The first time i checked the injector itself. I pulled it out and plugged the hole and had a friend crank it. It wasnt firing.
Today I had him crank it while I checked the voltage.
Pin 2 of the CS injector(black wire) while cranking:
It flashed 12v for half a second then held between 7v-8v...Did this several times, each time hitting 12v for a split second then around 7-8 until he stopped cranking. When he would try again (5 seconds later) it would go to 12 then drop back down same way
Both pins of the timer connector:
Exactly the same thing!
Resistance between the engine and the negative terminal was 0.4ohms
I checked the time switch as per the FSM and it was within spec. I have not checked the resistance at the time switch yet as the truck was starting by this point... I'm not sure if that would have effected anything.
What could cause the low voltage?????

Well, other than "cold start problem for a while" we have no idea what the problem is.
You check injectors with a noid.
A good chunk of cold start problems have a tendency to be related coolant leval and/or coolant temp sensor.

By "cold start problem" I mean I'm having problems starting the truck when cold. Starts up instantly once its warmed up.
I have to crank then wait then crank then wait then crank and it'll finally cough to life.
The cold start injecter is supposed to receive 12v so I'm not sure why you are referring to a noid.
You do however check the other 4 injectors with a noid.
Thanks for the great constructive help you just offered.

When you turn the key to crank the engine, and only while cranking, a full 12v should go to the time switch. Then, if the time switch / coolant is below a certain temp (65F give or take, if I remember correcly) voltage should pass to the cold start injector, causing it to open... again, this is only while cranking; let off the key, like the engine has started, and the voltage to the time switch should cut out, closing the injector, if the coolant is below 65F.
If coolant is above 65F, the time switch and cold start injector do pretty much nothing: the ECU uses the coolant temp, intake air temp, throttle position and air flow to start the engine. If it's that warm out and you're having issues with "cold" starts, your problem is not what you think it is.

i would need to look at a wiring diagram to see where the 12v comes from. if u have one, see where the 12 is suppose to come from. check from there. if 12v is present. than you might have a wiring issue
