w56 vs g52
#21
Okay stagger lee...
I found a g52 same as (54) for $100. So, why not just do a doubler...right?
Basically I have no idea what transfer case I would use...can you give some insight? I could search all day for this too. Don't feel like it. I will do some research later.
Thanks!!!

Do I simply buy two transfer cases (same ones) and install this?

Basically you have a forward shift and a top shift t-case. The forward shift has links that go forward to place the t-case shifter right up close by the tranny stick shift, and the top load, the stick comes straight up out of the t-case setting it back a bit. Look for 2 top load cases. To double up and a far I was told you need to have 2 top loaders or you have to convert the forward shift t-case to a top load, but its a pain in the a$$. I think you can run a forward shift up front and a top shift in the rear for doubler, but I could be wrong.

There is detailed install instructions on TG.

Think you can handle it? I just like them cause I have an acquaintance there. Marlin is great too.

I can pull it off, but I have built a bunch of VW motors and pulled apart a few trannys in my day. Its really not that big a deal. Look at the tools list. If those aren't in your box right now, don't attempt it. On the other hand if you buy a spare t-case you can take your time and learn. Find someone that knows what they are doing to help you out. You never be able to do it if you don't attempt it. Those instructions are pretty thorough.

Definitely got those tools lol. Except an air wrench...I just have an impact. Don't think it matters though. And probably have the rest. Thinking I should really attempt it. Which t-case is this for? The top shift? Thanks!

Yeah I did...although I already knew the answer
Just wanted to make sure you knew it too
I think I'm gonna go for it.
Which t-case would be better for my truck? I'm guessing the top shift one? (we might have went through this already...lol)

Yeah scuba steve, the non inviter. lol Those gears will work in either box, top or forward as long as its gear driven. I say go for it.

Only matters if you are considering doubling up later, makes it easier. Otherwise forward is just as good as top, IMO, just has linkage, more parts. maybe top shift starts at 86. So many people do swaps and have done swaps. I have scene it every which way.

Also, when looking at a tranny/transfer case...is there anyway to tell if it is good without installing it? Move through the gears?
Thanks

as for the orriginal question im not sure what tranny looks best on paper but down here we eat W56's for lunch and the L52's seem to be the ones that hold up the best. just from experience.
I would definitely try that T-case yourself, they really aren't very difficult. As soon as you take it apart you will see how it is supposed to work. If you really get yourself into a pickle you can always drive it down here to Bend and me and harry will set it up for ya
