W56 Top Shift Rebuild With Marlins Kit - Pics Along the Way

The tranny was a LOT more involved than the duals. The duals were a cinch to build. I would start with the duals and then move on to the tranny. You have to have a press for the tranny. I believe I stated all the tools that I had used. I used harbor freight press, large bearing separator, and a puller/separator kit that they have. I'm not a huge fan of harbors tools, but these are rudimentary tools for the most part and have at least a 30 day warranty (for the pullers). On the tranny, we had to use an impact gun on the pullers a couple times to get some of the items off the main main/counter shaft. Putting it back together was the easy part
I ended up using the wally world lube for the "break-in" period.

After the break in period what lube did you end up putting in there? I went to NAPA and they had some bottles and the price was pretty much the same as Wallyworld. I'm going to need to fill my tranny up soon, so I'm curious as to what you did. Thanks

I haven't put good oil back in it yet. I'm still right at about 500 miles. I will go with either amsoil or redline. Both are very good synthetics and match the oil specifications. Our trannies are a little strange for oil requirements as they aren't suppose to be GL5, just GL4. I've done quite a bit of reading up on it. I'd use the same oil in your tcases as well since they will likely mix a little.

I'm in the process of doing the input shaft bearing on my W-56B. I used a press at work and pulled the old one out and pressed the new one on. I'm stuck on the shift forks though. I too lost one of those stupid C-clips, thanks to this thread I have the part # and need to go to the dealer tomorrow. I put my case back together and the tranny won't shift into any of the gears. I'm confused on the lock pins on the shift fork rods. I have the small one in the center rod and the bigger ones pushed up and down from the center hole but the rods won't move. I'm confused on what the ball bearings and the springs do also.

It has been a while since I did the rebuild and have since sold the tranny because I'm in the process of a 1UZ swap and needed stronger tranny (R150F). I would stick to this thread and the FSM for all assembly.
I did have an issue with shifting when I had put it together the first time. It had something to do with how the tail end was mated up and trying to shift it if it wasn't all secured down. I can't remember if something wanted to "pop" out of place or not. It was all fixed by taking the tail end off and carefully assembling the backend again and bolting it together (just enough to hold everything so it wouldn't move) and then trying to shift. I would give it a shot.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm gonna take both sides of the case back off tomorrow for sure. I'm gonna see how it shifts with just the rods and forks on with out the shifter. Something isn't matching up. Thanks for this thread you took better pics than I did, if I get in the deep weeds with this I might send you a pm.

Thanks! It did take a bit of extra work, but I hadn't seen anything out there close to it for a rebuild. I'm glad to see that it is helping people still.

From another forum I am on I read that Photobucket is wanting $$$ to host pics and isn't being friendly with linking.

Ok, I finished rebuilding my trans. now I seem to have an issue. Before I put the cases together I had no problem getting clutch forks to slide in gear. So i decided to do a dry run and assemble it before sealing it all up. Got it together but I cannot get it into gear. Took it apart and the forks still slide in and out of gear. So I'll try it again tomorrow and see what happens. If anyone is still reading this, any ideas or thoughts?
