Vortec or 22RE upgrades?

I am tired of the little 22re in my 90 Ext cab.
I have read the other forums and junk and still don't know what I wanna do.
I know this might be a dead horse beaten subject but let me hear it.
I was thinking of doing the Vortec conversion or maybe doing the cam shaft, headers and air filter on the 22re. What are people thoughts on 22re turbo?
Thanks partners.

What do you want?

I wouldn't fool with a domestic swap unless you are very experienced.

You aren't going to get big numbers out of a 22re even with a turbo. It's an interesting set up though.

The 3.4 swap is the best bet if you are going to switch to a V6.

You can throw money at the 22re, but its pretty futile. For the same cost the 3RZ-FE will make way more power.
Also 5VZ-FE if you want a v6 or 1UZ-FE if you want a v8. They all have their perks and drawbacks. You can also go domestic, but i find that if you stick with a toyota motor it will raise the value of your truck. Around here I see domestic swapped yotas sit on craigslist for a very long time. Just my opinion, up to you.
3RZ is going to be the easiest swap if you have a 22RE in there already.

How is it that you have been researching and still find building the 22rec as even an option.

Even the turbo one at that .

Now while it is possible to get great gains out of a 22RTEC the cost is rather expensive and your Horsepower numbers are still below a stock 3.4

Then if you want pure Horsepower you can build a small block Chevy for around a few thousand dollars .

Then as the cost to upgrade the drive train increases as things are broke and twisted .

just how much do you want to spend$$$$ ??

How Much of the work can you do yourself??

Small block Chevy
Pros:
Cheap
Make great power
Parts are readily available at any junkyard, unlike most Toyotas (at least in my area)

Cons:
Gas mileage
Cost to adapt to your Toyota

With the cost of upgrading the drivetrain, you might as well just do a 3.4L swap and keep it all Toyota.

But just as wyoming9 said, how much work can you do yourself? Don't get into a project and then realize it's too difficult. You have to know your limitations.

I originally thought about swapping to the 5vz-fe 3.4 or the 2uz-fe 4.7 but as stated I can get my hands on a chevy motor but toyota harder to find.
Reason I considered the 22re is that motor is easy and simple.
I can get by doing most of the work and I have friends and brothers that are plenty experienced and willing.
I honestly don't care how much it'll cost but I'd have to build slow due to money.
I think what I am aiming for is doing the 3.4 when I can get my hands on one.

Interesting concept!!

I don`t care what it costs but I have to go slow because of no money

I have one or two of those now going on 20 plus years sooner or later I will get the last $50,000 to finish the projects.

What do you want to do with your truck that requires more power? Do you just want to go fast?

I see 22re powered trucks hauling all kinds of stuff every day. They are very popular with landscapers and scrap haulers

Any question for any engine swap you can imagine has already been posted online. Learn how to search.

I'm guessing you are like 90% of all people asking about swaps. Big dreams that go nowhere.
