Hi there. Just checked the valve clearance on my 3VZe.

All were within spec except the no. 4 intake which was .012" and the range is .007"-.011"

Can't get any shims for a few days maybe longer.
Sort of want to get this on the road this weekend.

What do the experts think?

I'm not an expert, but I think you'll be fine.

 

Unless you just did a fresh valve job or a head rebuild or all of the other valves are at the lower end of the spec I wouldn't worry about 0.001". If some are much closer to the low end of the spec you can try swapping the shims around until you find a configuration that works. Probably your tightest valve shim swapped for your loose valve shim. Just make sure you mark them so you can put them back if you don't find a configuration that makes you happy.

 

Ok thanks. I'll see if I can find one that's a better match.

 

Done. Swapped shims with the shim from the tightest valve, and now they are all in spec.

 

Update. Annoying tick is now gone.
That .001" made a big difference.

Now I just have to fix the one messed up spark plug hole.

 

The tick on a 3.0 is USUALLY an injector. Difficult to get a "tick" with solid lifters directly under the cam unless something's way off.

Glad you fixed your issue & didn't have to buy any more shims~

Is your spark plug hole stripped? Helicoil it. The bad part is you REALLY need to take the head off to do it without getting metal shavings in the cylinder. If you're going to do it with head on, use a slender air hose end & blow the hell out of it after you're finished.

 

It's not stripped yet, but it's sure messed up.

The plug is on an slight angle and is no where near seated properly.

It is snug, and I'll watch it to make sure it's sealed well.
