I measured my valve clearances this afternoon and after going through 3 times I get the same measurments which seem pretty bad off. It seems I need to switch the exhaust shims with the intake shims. I've been hearing a slight ticking noise when excelerating for the longest time. I just don't understand why they would be so out of adjustment and the exhaust having nearly propper intake measurements and the intake having nearly propper exhaust measurments is wierd.

Are you sure you're not confusing the intake for the exhaust and vice-versa when you're looking at them?

 

yea I'm sure I double checked. They are off that bad.

 

I can't just switch them out though I need to measure each one and find the correct shim to replace them with. I might can switch a few around to make the clearances more accurate.

 

You could pull the shims & grind off the valve stem about .05 ~

Those aren't off by much at all really. All the intakes are actually still in specs. And the exhaust are only 1-3 thousandths too tight. Just fix those 6 and you're good to go.

BTW, If you're going by the 88 FSM specs, they've tightened the valve clearance specs since then. So yours are only needing slightly adjusted.

No...nothing was changed on the later engine's valvetrains. Just the valve lash was revised.

Don't do that. Not unless you've got a grinder that has a stone for side-grinding. The tips have to be PERFECTLY flat and true. Or damage can result. Not to mention that ~.05 is WAY too much. More like .001-.003, .005 at the most. AND you'd have to pull the heads to get the exhaust valves out first.

You'd be better off grinding down the shims. I've done it...but I don't recommend it to the apprentice level mechanic/machinist.

 

after getting a new feeler guage today I rechecked the measurements and found that cylinder 3 exhaust is too tight for a .0015 inch, therefor its way off. All the others are still the same. Anyone know where to pick up shims online? Or, does anyone know if toyota corrolas have the same sized shim as the pickups? i grabbed a bunch of camry shims from the junkyard but they aren't as big around as the pickup shims.

 

You can purchase the shims from online dealerships like 1stToyotaParts.com. No one else sells them but Toyota.

I've never heard of shims being swappable between different engines.
