First off sorry no pics. I am at work 110 miles from the truck at the moment.

The engine has 2 sensors located on the top back of the engine right next to the firewall in the center. They are both broken off and melted. I need to know the names of them so I can order new ones. Thanks in advance. I looked at the FSM and Haynes manual but cant seem to find them.

 

is it the one on the water bypass?

2 hoses coming off?

See this link. If thats it they are $60 at the dealer but you can repair them. I think its a VSV

the switch on the left in the pic (the one by the upside-down U hose) is the cold start injector time switch. the one on the right I think is the coolant temp sensor

 

Blurr is exactly right. I had to replace both of these today myself. The cold start switch is pretty much a Toyota only thing @$130 list(I know I about fell over too) and the water temp is about $18 at many parts houses. I had to sacrifice a 19mm socket in order to get the water temp sensor back on with out breaking it (upper manifold still on vehicle) by cutting about half of it away and leaving only a ring at the base to keep it from splitting (looks kinda like an O2 sensor socket now).... Good luck

 

$130...... YIKES! I really wish I could rig the one I had but it is broken. If I ran with out it hooked up would the truck over heat or run poorly?

 

After hrs of searching I found this =) the closest thing to my answer.

In your picture... Under where the Intake goes there is a sensor there.
Is it a temperature sensor???? can you tell me the name of it.?
Now you see the wire that runs by the head, off that sensor...
it sheared off right there....

would this cause the vechile to overheat?

Is it just one or both that are broken?

Without the cold start time switch (the black one) you'd have trouble on cold starts. Might not start at all. Without the temp sensor (the grey one), it would run poorly for sure....on the rich side. It wouldn't overheat, though, as it doesn't "control" coolant temps. It just meters it for the fuel mix and timing advance.

The cold start switch can be bypassed with a wire from the connector to the battery ground and one (+) to a toggle switch. (EDIT...sorry: One wire from ground on switch connector to toggle and one from toggle to battery ground. Just turn off the toggle one it's running)

The temp sensor you can get for less than half that price at O'Reilly, etc. No, it's not Toyota, but it would get you by well enough if funding is limited.

 

that's the knock sensor. it has nothing to do with managing engine temperature, if it failed you'd just have a knock sensor code on your dash
