V6 Clutch in a 4Banger?

Well guy's I've used the search engine to no avail...so here is my first post with you fine experts of YotaTech.

I've got a 90 4x4 with a 22re motor and w56 engine. It's time to put a new clutch in the thing.

Here is the issue...

I ordered a new clutch Kit from the local Orileys. When it came in everything seemed to match up just fine except the pressure plate. The pressure plate that came in the kit is bigger than the one that came out of the truck.

Well we figured we had a part miss boxed to we ordered another new one...Same story.

Just for kicks and giggles they had a 3.4L v6 clutch kit that we compared the parts out of my truck too, and low and behold everything seemed to match up.

Here are my questions.

Did Toyota put v6 clutches in there 4 cylinder trucks from the factory?

Would there be a logical reason someone would do this aftermarket? Is there an advantage to the V6 clutch?

How do I determine for sure the clutch kit I have?

Any help you guys can give me would be great.

LUK catalog shows a different clutch for V/6 and 4 so it appears they aren't the same. Best way to see if the one you have is right is to match them up, or better buy the clutch at a place that has real partsmen behind the counter, and you'll get the right part the first time. You can also lookup and order the clutch from LUK or Sachs yourself and you'll know you ordered the right one, they both offer online catalogs and pictures to compare.

I appreciate the input. I know the parts are different between the v6 and the 4cylinder. It's not the partsman behind the counter sometime you have to go where the price is right. I believe I'm the one that's screwed up as I believe there is a 6cylinder clutch in my 4cylinder. My questions were trying to figure out why.

What leads you to believe it had a V/6 clutch in it?
Looks can be deceiving, are there any numbers on your old parts to cross reference?

I just found out the hard way that there is a difference between a 22re clutch pre and post 1993. The 93-95 has a slightly larger bolt and alignment pin pattern.

Is it possible that a newer engine and or flywheel was installed in your truck?

I think we have a winner here...Matched what I had out of the truck to a clutch kit at another local parts store and they matched. I thing O'rileys has a bad part number. They swore that it was the same clutch from 86-95. Problem is the "other" local parts store wants $140.00 more for the kit. They priced themselves out of the market. I can buy a Centerforce for the same price they quoted me.

Thanks for the input.
