Using ATF as P/S fluid?
1986 4runner 22re
I wanted to see if anyone else is running atf for p/s fluid. I replaced the pump last sunday due to a leak with a reman and now i have a slight leak from my pump. The truck had atf in it when i purchased it and i didn't feel like flushing the whole system. Just wanted to see if its me being lazy and i should have flushed it and replaced the fluid with p/s fluid or i just got a bad pump.

Do not ever use p/s fluid in a Toyota!
Dexron iii atf is the only fluid you should have in the power steering system.
It must be a Japanese thing, I have a Suzuki and Subaru that spec dexron iii as well.

Ford/Mazda cars of the 80's and '90s, maybe longer, specd the old type F ATF for their power steering, even when the trannys in those cars specd Dextron/Mercon III
Type F has less friction modifiers than Dextron. More of a true hydraulic oil.
Toyotas do like Dextron III.
I have used type F without trouble as well. No 'power steering fluid', for sure.

Though to be fair, the older reservoirs got a decal with the specs. By the time it was in my hands, mine was wordless. I think I found that info in the owner's manual.
