turbo help

Ok so I'm new to the whole forum thing so I don't know to much about it. I have an 86 Toyota 22re turbo with a little bit of smoke coming from the exhaust when at an idle. The previous owner had put a straight pipe on it and that's when it started smoking. The first thing I did to the truck was pull the motor and rebuild it from the block up just to start fresh. But the smoke is still there. Will a cat and muffler take care of the smoke? Or is it something more? I'm also needing a torque spec for a 91 yota for the front yoke on the diff. Can anyone help with this?

I take it you are running the stock ct20 turbo and you are talking about blue smoke....Correct? If you didn't rebuild your turbo, you are probably leaking oil around the seals into the exhaust housing or your turbo exhaust housing is cracked which is pretty common for the CT20. More than likely that's the source of the smoke!
If you really want to learn more about the 22-rte then here is the best place to start.

Yeah the truck runs strong and the turbo spools with no prob but it smokes and I didn't want to have to rebuild it because the bolts in it are old and rusty I didn't want to take a chance on braking them. But I'll soak them in some penetrating oil and go from there. Thanks man

I imagine there are rebuild kits for the ct20 the 22rte forum should point you in the right direction. The shaft nut is a left hand thread so be careful. If you disassemble the ct20 check for cracks between the wastegate and the exhaust housing, this is a common problem.

If it's cracked like this...it's toast!

T3/T4 will work, but you have to change to a t3/t4 manifold. You could upgrade to a ct26 off of a supra, it's basically bolt on, you do have to enlarge the mounting holes in the ct26 to mate to your manifold. I've got a good ct26; comes with a rebuild kit for sale if you want to go that route.

I bought it to turbo my 5m-ge a few years back, but that never happened. When I bought it, it was supposed to have been a good turbo, but I can't say one way or the other because I never used it. I didn't want to put it on and the find it needed rebuilding so I bought a kit for it, which I never installed! I think $100.00 + shipping for a turbo and rebuild kit is not asking too much, I know I paid much more than that for it. Shipping would be from 04619, it probably weighs at least 30-40 lbs, but if you are serious about it I'll get an exact weight. It came off of a 7M-gte supra, I've also got a set of factory 7m-gte heat shields that you might be able to use with it, I know yout ct-20 heat shields won't work with it.

Kind of off topic, but if you happen to have an "extra" 22RET thermosta housing, I'd be interested in taking it off your hands....

Sorry for the delay! Its been 10 degrees F or colder here all week and when I get home from work the energy level is a little low, so I haven't dug out the turbo to get it weighed. I'm off Friday so I'll get it done then and figure out the shipping.
