The Turbo is Alive...with some problems
So last night I finally got my truck back together, after a few "set backs"
I got it started last night after playing with the timing, idled well but sounded like an out of tune 4popper. Engine was smooth, but you could hear each ignition through the exhaust(I only have 3' of pipe after the turbo right now and no muffler).
Tried to start it again today, wouldn't go: so back to the drawing board: TDC, timing, plugs, etc.
Turns out I was 90* off on the timing and had the #2 and #3 plug wires in the wrong spot on the cap...how it ran to begin with I don't know.
Anyways, fiddled again and got everything right. The truck started fine and after a bit of rotating the distrubutor it sounded excellent(best I've ever heard this truck sound). It'd idled great(fantastic) for 2-3min, then it got a little rougher. The idle didn't drop any, but you could hear a little bit of stumbling(very tiny), and a few small pops from the exhaust.
I noticed that some of the fumes were leaking from the exhaust up into the engine bay. So I'm guessing that the engine migh be sucking in some exhaust.
Everything is tight, plugs are good. Can anyone think of anything else I can check before I take it to the exhaust shop tommorow(friday)?

Well, I "fixed" my exhaust, so there's no more smoke coming from the back of the turbo. But I've still got the same idle issue, it's just not "perfect".
I guess the big stuff is taken care of though: no leaks, it's running "right", and I don't hear any strange noises. It'll be easier to tell on leaks when I can hear the engine over the exhaust though.
And on a side note: even with a crappy small high spooling turbo: turbo spool with straight pipes sounds friggen cool!

Without a dyno I can only give what the "book" numbers would be.
Stock 22RTE claimes 135hp w/ 173ft-lbs of torque
I've also got an EB street RV head and 268 Cam, so in theory I'm right around the 150/180 mark so right about what the 3VZE is supposed to be. This is of course theortical. I might dyno at the end of the summer before the new stuff goes in(new manifold, turbo, TB, ecu etc) as a baseline.
The little bit that I've driven it so far, it's kinda gutless right off the line. Mine is a "mid-compression" motor(~8.5:1), but once I get to about 2K the turbo is spooled up enough to notice. The higher 3.83 1st gear doesn't really hlep any...I can see why toyota used a 4.31 1st gear in the R151F
Exhaust is going on right now, so we'll see how she sounds when it's done.
