I like the 22ret, we got plenty of power using just the CT26 upgrade while upping the boost and adding performance exhaust but toyota parts are supposed to be everywhere and easy to find and this engine let us down in that aspect. If you want something high performance go with a newer engine unless you find a deal thats to good to pass up.

my dad has a 89 he rebuilt the engine had new stage 2 rtv cam, enlarged injectors had the heads ported n polished, race edge grind on the valves, racing pistion rings ( set up for Nitrousoxid or turbo/supercharger ) but he isnt doing that at all, he also has a hooker header i believe 2.5 exhaust out the back, k&n cold air intake 4.88 gears i believe and hes running 35x14.5 super swamper boggers and has plenty of power ( not the passing cars on the highway ) power that people like. but still in retrospective it has enough power for what its used for and he has no problems. I tried calculating the hp on top of the stock they come with lets just say 110 hp well after all the ENGINE mods he prob has close to 160 and in turn has enough power to move those bigass tires lol but to help out my buddy has a 85 22r stock engine, stock drive train, and hes running 33x14 superswamper boggers in the rear, and 33x10.5 in the front, ( bought the truck that way ) and he has no problems really yeah the truck dont have alot of power but drives out fine with the 33s so ... to help you out in my opinion you dont need a ton of hp you want bolt on hp do a cold air intake, the header, the exhaust and look into some gears n youll be fine. lol

I'd say a good flowing exhaust and a mild cam would give you that little edge your looking for, but if your going for 200HP, then you cant go cheap, so header, cam, maybe port and polish the head and a cold air intake, and thats about what a turbo system is going to give you in power compared to that list. the 22ret is rated at 136HP I believe and if you add a header, cam, and a P&P to the head, then you might pull 130-140HP. Hope you figure it out, might look on craigslist or go to the junkyard and get lucky

I have a turbo on my 22re. look at my signature line to see some of the details. Peice together the turbo kit itself, and save money for engine management as that is where the real power will be made. You will need to lower compression some too if you really want to take full advantage. Otherwise you are stuck running 5psi or so. Which is not bad by any means. Get your manifold from Leen Steed from steedspeed. Turbo off ebay. Torbo lube lines ebay, ebay universal intercooler piping and intercooler etc. Search around and you can find my page where I upgrade my turbo manifold etc. Should give some Ideas.

However you can not overcome the mechanical advantage of gears by adding a few horsepower. You would need to add a load of horsepower which would be more than gears. I regeared my truck for under a grand by doing the labor myself and taht included getting a detroit true trac.

saitotik, this thread is 9 months old lol

oh and superbleeder- what makes you think you're ganna be around 150-160hp? and you mean crank no wheel hp right?

cuz with the turbo stock im at 135, with what ive done so far, prob 150, and after i crank the boost ~165, so i dont see how you could be making similar numbers with basically just a cam+head swap

What? Do they actually take kids out of school and tell them the bass ackwards way of building a truck?

Why is it always the Toyota some slack jaw kid buys and proceeds to "modify" the most backwards way than a sane person would?

Don't have power? Well here's a tot... TAKE them dang big fat tires off!

Get stuck a lot? Well a lift won't help you here, Einstein.

Turbo's? Yeah, the cheaper ones are better

Kid can't fathom how to hook a Turbo to his truck, but he knows he wants one... and CHEAP!

your saying the cheaper ones are always worse? Its MUCH MUCH cheaper to get a turbo off of a stock toyota or mitsu; or even a holset from a diesel than buy a new turbo.

True; buying ebay junk is worthless for more than a few months or anything high boost related.

I could make 200rwhp on a 22RE with a turbo cheaply (1k in mods) but thats becuase it would consist of a piggy back, larger fuel injectors, turbo manifold, turbo, lines, electronic boost controller, intercooler, etc etc..

But i'd rather swap a supra motor in it.

Those same "kids" drive bikes with no exhaust (50 somethings on Harleys). Welcome to the age of dumb.
