truck wont start just clicks

i have a '91 3vze. the truck will start sometimes. most of the time the starter just clicks. i just charged the battery and put more water in it. every now and again it will start, but i can sit there for 10 minutes trying to start it and it wont turn over. every time i jump start it it works. what would cause this?

Check the connection at your starter for corrosion or looseness. I had the same problem a few years back.

toy_pickup or calcuta could be right. Have Autozone check your battery. They'll tell you if it's suspect.

Or ehertz is right. Check your battery terminals. Make sure they feel good and tight, no corrosion. If you want, clean the inner part with sandpaper and apply dielectric grease.

10 to 1 says one of those will fix it.

if its not your battery, it's most likely your alternator. check the wires coming off of alternator. make sure the ground and other wires are connected good. Does it continue to run just fine once it's jump started? or do the dash lights, radio, headlights, or any electric dim or fail? i had this happen before. it would start every so often and when it did, i'd drive it and all the sudden the lights inside would dim, and thats when i knew that if i turned it off, it wouldnt start again.

the easiest thing to do would be take your battery down to the auto parts store. like Napa. i dont know if you have one where you are but they will test it for free, if its bad, replace it. if not, bring yiour alternator in, they will test that for free too!
