Truck wont even push-start
Alright so I was trying to go up a hill today in 4-HI didnt make it started to roll back down and I was stupid and tried to use the engine to slow me down instead of the brakes. Long story short, it won't start. I can crank it, and it dosen't even sound like the starter it making contact with anything. It spins, and it sounds like it is spinning fast.
So I think I broke the flywheel, or maybe part of the starter or both. I am confused why I cant push-start the truck.
Where can I start looking?
UPDATE 9 June 2009 I later find out that I jumped the timing and bent the valves. This thread will continue with that getting fixed.

Yep, that is hard on the old electrical system and starter. I was reading a thread about this happening to someone else on another forum but it escapes me where at the moment. Might have blown up the clutch friction disk too from over revving the clutch.

UPDATE: found this online
get under your car in park and parking brake on. keep hand clear of moving parts, You should be able to see the starter and the Bendix gear on the end of it where it comes out to turn your flywheel. have someone try and start it briefly and see what is happening.
The gear should slide out and make contact with the flywheel when the car is started. If it doesn't come out or the small gear doesn't spin then you know its the starter.
If it comes out and spins but the flywheel doesn't. You have a bad flywheel. Its just a big gear with teeth that could be worn out. Though not likely.
If everything spins but the engine doesn't try to turn over then your flywheel has broken free from the engine. Not likely either.
Me, I would go and buy a new starter and put it on and enjoy me ride. Very easy to do just a couple of bolts and wires.

So today I took the transmission off and everything looks good there, also the flywheel and clutch look like they are in great shape. The starter was also in great shape.
Tomorrow I will do a compression test on the engine.
I turned the flywheel and the harmonic balancer was spinning so I dont thing there is a problem with the crank.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Did you use the engine to stop you from rolling downhill backwards by using the forward gears? If you did you may have broken your timing belt (3.0 V6) or chain, guide, sprocket, etc (22R(E)), which would result in your starter easily turning your crankshaft and a no start whatsoever condition. A compression test for a disabled valve train would show very little to no compression in some cylinders and possibly some compression in others, but it won't be consistent between cylinders. What happens when you push start it? Is your battery good? Cause you require juice to power your sparkplugs even when you are push starting it. (It's not a diesel after all).
And I'm just curious, but what ever possessed you to use forward gears to slow down a truck moving in reverse? Should have just thrown it in reverse if you were under 25mph...

If the motor is spinning fast and easily (sound different then usual?) probibly a timing chain problem.
Question, why would you use forward gears to slow yourself while reversing? Blonde moment?

update: timing chain was perfect. I wasn't going 55 backwards, i was just rolling backward. And instead of stopping i just tried going forward with the gearing.
So, I removed the head today. Timing belt looked great. block looks good so far, i think i blew the seals around the pistons. We ran a pressure test and nothing came up. Not one chamber. We checked the gauge and it worked. So, rebuild the engine.
As long as i'm in here, what should I replace?? Timing Belt? Water pump? Fuel Filter? What else?

this does not make sence... unless the timing chain skipped a few teeth and bent some valves. did you verify that the starter was spinning the crank? did you verify the basics spark, fuel, compression? i guess im just missing some peices to your puzzle.
