Trim/remove rear bumpstops?

I'm sure tons of people have done this but I couldnt find much when I searched on it. I would assume you would gain quite a bit of rear articulation but I'm also guessing there would be some downsides. Enlighten me.

You would still bottom out on the shock at about the same point - therefore no gain & you could damage the shock

You could get shocks that travel longer and mount them differently.
