So today I get to work and notice this rectangular chunk of rubber beside my truck. A friend of mine identified it as a tranny mount. I looked and sure enough, there it was, gone. My question is, can I reuse the old mount, or is this a sign it needs to be replaced? The old mount looks to be in good condition. Also, I drove about 100 miles of Maine winter roads today, anything I should look for as far as more damage?

Well, if its ON THE GROUND NEXT TO IT... you probably should just buy a new one..

Isn't there like 8 bolts holding that thing on anyways? Unless of course yours just spit the rubber, which means you need a new one regardless.

You'd think you'd notice if your transmission was just freely torqueing everywhere

Lol dude, just buy a new mount.. Trust me, if the old one spit the rubber out, the other side isn't too far out. Buy a new one now before you start tearing motor mount rubber, if you haven't already.

 

the actual metal mount looks like a V welded to the frame, and a flat bracket bolted to the transmission. Is there more than the rubber bumper to replace?

 

There should be a cradle that bolts onto your transmission, then it bolts to the tranny crossmember, unless somebody bubba'd up somethin..

 

The metal mounts all looks sound, not rotted at all. If its just a bolt on, new ones on the way. thanks for the help and glad you got a laugh.

 

OK so I called the parts stores around including the dealership and it seems the closest transmission mount is in Tokyo. I ask again, if the mount and the rubber still look good can I put the rubber stop back (safely for a bandaid)in the mount for a couple of days until the new one arrives?

 

if you can get it to go back on, then yes.

 

Is it an Auto 4x4? If I recall correctly, they have a huge rubber balance block on the back that is maybe a vibration damper that is not really a mount at all, I am not sure exactly what it does. I may have an extra in the shed if you want it, but I'm near Chicago ... shipping would be $$ due to the weight? PM me if you're interested though.

Yeah, stick the old one in and use a ratchet strap or something to keep your transmission from flopping around everywhere.

 

I bought one from Rockauto maybe a month or two back. If I may, buy the Beck Arnley one -- it had an OEM part number stamped on the side of it.

If you're buying motor mounts at the same time, buy the craptastic brand -- both of those are made by the same manufacturer, Beck Arnley just reboxes them and sells them for double the price. Those are not made by OEM though (I can't comment on performance as I have not installed the motor mounts yet).

One wierd problem I've got with the new mount (perhaps you may run into it) is that even though the old mount is IDENTICAL to the new one, I was able to get two of the bolt in on one side of the tranny, but the other two just would not go in. Of course, I've got the two on the cross member in, as well as two on the right side, and I don't really drive the truck in the winter, so I'm just letting it settle and I'll check if I can reinstall the bolts in the spring, but still, it's annoying -- I tried even using a punch to align the holes, but even with considerable force, the bolts don't really align well -- I suspect it's because of fresh rubber.

Anyways, if anyone has dealt with this, let me know, and for OP, I paid $50 or so for the rockauto beck arnley unit -- yours definitely needs replacement.

What a load of bull no one has one.

Unless yours is a real odd ball or the first Toyota 4x4 in the USA

 

just what year truck/auto/stick/engine are we referring to? sounds like an auto & kind of BS no one has one..replace them as it will fail again

Thanks again for the help everyone. The truck is a 5 speed 4x4. The new mount is already purchased just waiting for it to arrive. Got new cab and motor mounts too, but Ill wait for spring when I can address the frame to do those. also checking the salvage yard today for a temporary one.
