transmission leak

Hello, new guy here.

I bought a 95 4runner a couple of months ago. Three weeks after purchase the oil temp light lit up occasionally and transmission began leaking. My mechanic said there was a crack in the transmission case where it meets the pan (part that has a screen in it?) and the that the threads holding in the pan were stripped. (He said the previous owner did a temp fix to unload the car)
He also said I would probably need a new transmission.

My question is: Would it be possible to take off the pan and seal the crack with J-B weld? If figure I have nothing to lose except the time involved. Another question: What happens when you take the pan off? How much fluid comes out, and how do I refill?

I'm currently driving the car with no apparent problem with the transmission, except for the fact that every few days I have to top off the transmission fluid.

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

Given the expense of a tranny I would give J-B Weld, and anything else you can think of, a try first. The pan should have a drain plug, so you can drain it before removing it. Afterwards just fill through the dipstick. My tranny (A340F) takes about 4 litres for a drain and fill.
