Trans sawp or replacement
I am thinking about selling my 98 4runner SR5 4x4 before going to Iraq to help pay off some stuff but I would like to leave my girlfriend with something that would do better taking our dogs around and would be better in the snow than her Focus.
I found a 90 4runner SR5, 4x4 with an auto for $1700. It's got 133k mile but says that trans is slipping. Is there something that's common with these trannys.
I was thinking about offering them $1200 cash or so and then find a tranny. What auto's can I use? What would be the best tranny to put there? I like 5 speeds, like my 98, better but I don't want to tackle this before leaving. How are is it to replace the auto tranny as a whole. I can do most stuff but I have never tried this before.
Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated. Oh, any good places to get a cheap tranny? I need something that will last about 1 year and a half and maybe 10k miles until I get back. A good working high mileage tranny doesn't scare me.

If you have access to a garage, tranny jack and a decent set of tools I'd imagine replacing the tranny would be within reach. Maybe you don't even need a garage.
To swap in a 5spd you'd be looking at a bigger project requiring a new ECM or at the very least some creative wiring of your old one.
I'd look on your local Craig's List for a tranny... maybe even find a 4Runner or Pickup of similar generation with a blown motor that is being parted out or for sale cheap.
I assume the GF isn't comfortable driving a stick? To me, leaving her with a vehicle you know is reliable even though not as easy to drive might be the best option if you are limited on time.

No. She like manuals and hates that her Focus is an auto. I know I have a good reliable vehical but I am also doing about 15k in remodeling on or house before I go so she doens't have to worry about that. The main thing is she wants something that 4 wheel drive for bad weather and can take our two big dogs places. I also would be able to put other stuff in the garage and wouldn't feel bad about parking an older cheaper vehical outside for a year and a half. Also I wouldn't feel the need to pay full coverage insurance on it.
