Tranny and Transfer Case levers hitting

Hey guys so I am new here and new to Toyotas and 4x4s. I just bought a 88 4runner 3.0 and the the stick shift in second gear hits the transfer case lever in 2Hi . Now I don't think thats supposed to happen, the PO said that they had a new clutch installed at a garage about 500 miles ago, and they stole his front drive shaft, so i am wondering if they did that because they couldn't get it to fit because they put the tcase back on wrong? Also am I supposed to be able to see the ringgear and flywheel from the the bottom?
Thanks a lot. Any help is appreciated.

Shifter in backwards.

No. You shouldn't be able to see it.

sounds like a backwards shifter and they left the access plate off the bottom. I would not be supprised if they did not install the top bellhousing bolts on the transmission.

Went through that last week. When I was in Reverse an Tcase in 2 Hi, they would hit. The hardest part can be getting the C-clip back on that holds the round cover on.

It's called a stiffener plate.

yes, that plate. You'd be suprised how many of those get "lost" when some shops do clutch jobs. Or they on the 3.0 they leave the upper most bolt off.

Thanks for the clarification Mud.

Thanks guys, I'll get that plate soon. Do you guys have a link to a good shifter reversal? I can't seem to find one and have no idea on how to even start to fix it.

Yeah, I've forgotten to put it back on myself. Until I got down to those bolts at the bottom and realized...umm, something doesn't look right here. Dammit! Now I've gotta back those PITA bolts at the top off so I can push it back far enough to slide it in! And then do it all over again!

What I can't figure out at present is the part number for that little bugger. Why am I not able to find that thing listed where it should be? Well, there's the bell...round 2! Wish me luck!

Found it! No wonder I had such a hard time, it's not actually called a stiffener plate.
