Tranny question
I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my 3slow and was wondering about the transmission. I have 268K miles on my 4runner at the moment and am thinking about what to do to make it go another 268K miles. I also have a option to buy a 98 tacoma transmission with 32K miles and was wondering if this would be an easy fit. I have heard that they are similar but was wondering if they use the same bolts.

I thought I'd answer your PM here. The Taco auto tranny will bolt up fine in place of the A340H (yes same bolts), but the drop for the front drive shaft will be on the drivers side (wrong side). So what most people doing a 3.4 swap do is use the Taco auto transmission but take off the Taco transfer case and use a gear driven transfer case from an older 4cyl 5 speed truck. The gear driven cases are stronger and have the output on the passinger side (right side) But you have to use an adapter to mate a gear driven TC to the Taco auto transmission. Marlin makes an adapter: http://www.marlincrawler.com/
Also the ATF dipstick will be on the wrong side, so you need to swap the trans oil pan for one that has the dipstick on the other side. ORS provided my oil pan has part of their very helpful kit (not sure what its originally made for, maybe a T-100): http://www.offroadsolutions.com/technicalarticles.htm
Also the Taco auto tranny needs the Taco ECU and wiring harness (or some kind of custom wiring harness). More reason to use the ORS kit for a 3.4 swap.
Well that's all I can think of at 6:30 am.
Good luck
