tranny problem

I have a manual transmission with a problem. The truck shifts fine when it is sitting still on level ground. When moving I have to come to a complete stop before I can shift into 1st. If I am parked on a hill and the truck is in 1st, when I push the clutch in it rolls back slightly and stops. It is then very hard to pull out of first into neutral with the clutch engaged. Once it is in neutral the truck can start rolling back. Also, are the synchronizers effected by the oil level?

Maybe I don't get what your saying exactly, but it sounds like normal operation to me.

About the oil level, what are you getting at there? You need to have the oil full when level, or yeah, the synchros can be effected. If you mean will the synchros be effected by the oil level when on an incline, no, they designed the things to be run every which way but upside down. Hell, they probably would run upside down, just might leak a little oil out through the shifter.

This is definitely not normal behavior. If I stop a a light on an incline, hold down the clutch I don't even need to hold the brake. The truck rolls back about an inch and stops. Thats with the clutch in and NO BRAKE on an incline.

Sorry, I thought by engaged you meant foot off the peddle. Not foot to the floor. And not with the engine running.

O.k., so clutch pedal down, in first gear, rolls back then stops. What happens then? The rpms I mean, does it lug the engine, or does it feel like it's out of gear? If you press the accelerator what happens (clutch still all the way in)?

Doesn't this just sound like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. If the engine can keep the truck from rolling on an incline with the clutch pedal pressed in that's the only solution I can see. That would be consistent with hard shifting as well.

when on level ground and the clutch all the way down I can hit the gas and it does not move. I start to slowly release the clutch and nothing happens till about half way off the pedal it starts to "engage"(sorry) and the truck starts moving. The engine stays the same, no lugging. ..............If the truck rolls back and inch and stops with the clutch down while in first gear, it is hard to then pull out of first and into neutral. If I pull hard enough it will pop out into neutral and start rolling back, or I release the clutch with a little gas, moving forward, to "take the weight off the gear" I can then shift to neutral with ease.

OK, new theory. Your clutch does not disengage properly AND your brakes are sticking a little bit.

On flat ground, the brakes stop the car from rolling forward when you press in the clutch that doesn't disengage all the way.

On a hill, they both work together to keep the car from rolling backwards. Put the car in neutral and the sticking brakes can't hold the car by themselves.

Only explanation I can think about right now.

It may be the clutch. I turn the car off and put it in first gear. I have someone hold down the clutch while I try and push the car with the hood open. I can see the engine moving when I try to push the car. This tells me the clutch is still engaged, but why does it still not move when the engine is on and the clutch down.
