Tranny jumping out of first

Tranny jumping out of first
There has been a couple of times that my tranny will jump out of first when I start up at a stop sign. I have owned the 91 4runner for about 2 months. It is a 3.0 with a 5 speed manual. Any ideas?
Thanks.

to a search on replacing the bushing. If the shifter bushing is worn it will do this. It is common problem after this many years & is a cheap fix. Works wonders.

I would say that your tranny is on its way out. Is it noisy yet? This is what started when mine went. It will get worse and worse and then the input bearing will start getting louder and louder. Mine never did explode but got very sloppy and loud.

mine also pops out of first gear when you go from reverse to first. I just back up, shift into first gear, and then start driving; about a second or 2 later, it pops out of gear. I know that sometimes you might not engage it into first, but it did it every single time. Now, I drive with my hand kinda holding it in first until I shift into second gear. Hasn't popped out since I started doing that. My dad says it could be the syncral gears in the tranny. It drives just fine, and doesn't have a hard time shifting into any gear(other than reverse). With, I have to move fast, I mean you have to grab the stick, and get it into reverse in like half a second, otherwise it wount go. I f you put it in neutral and release the clutch, and then push it back in, and then try to shift into reverse, you get major gear grindage. I have replaced the clutch already, so thats fine.

Yep, as already said, the shifter seat and bushing are a common cause of this problem. For such a cheap and easy fix, it is well worth investigating. Being that your 4Runner is a 91, it is probably worn out if it has never been changed.
