Tranny cooler problems

Tranny cooler problems
Hello. My wife has a 94 4Runner that has the towing pkg. With that package, there is two tranny coolers: one in the radiator and on that is on the inside of the passenger side frame rail and it attaches to the back of the T/C. Well, a rock decided it wanted to live in the cooler that is attached to the frame... I just want to plug the t/c where the lines come out of or something, but Toyota tells me that there is no part for that. Does anybody know what that part number is for the plug or has anybody found a good solution to take car of this. TIA

IIRC that is your transfer case cooler. I don't think 2nd gen's came with any auxiliary tranny cooler. I don't think you should get rid of it. You could probably pick one up at a junk yard or just get a new one.

the autos with the A340H came with a second (frame mounted) cooler that comes off the back of the xcase.
i would not advise bypassing it as durring times of "heavy" use it will through a trans temp light.
I bypassed mine for a short time while i was figureing out how to remount it after i had the crossover put in for the downey headers.
i took one of the exsting hard lines and cut it down into 2 little 2" long stubs and put a peice of rubber hose with hose clams on it to run right from the top to the bottom. (Sorry no pics)

If so, than that would also be a tranny cooler

Technically, yes, but considering the transfer case has its own drain plug and fill hole, I am not sure how much transfer of fluid happens between the transfer case and the tranny. Either way, I wouldn't run it without it.

THey are fillled from the same hole, the dipstick tube. they are drained from different holes, odd but FSM says that is the case, I am guessing theat the fluids dont swish back and forth, but that is just a dumb luck guess, if it is right.

I wouldn't remove the transfer case cooler, if anything I'd add a bigger one. I guess if you live in Alaska or Greenland and only use 4WD in the winter don't worry too much about it.

It would be interesting to run a temp gauge going to the transfer case cooler and one going to the tranny cooler to compare the temps while driving freeway, in town, 4 wheel hi, and 4lo. I bet you would see a big temp difference between the two when it is not in 4 wheel.

the x-fer case pan is filled when filling the tranny thru the dipstick
the x-fer case drop down portion to the front drive shaft is sepreate and has a seprate pump and cooler and is filled thru a hole in the back of the x-fer case beside and below the rear output shaft. if you dont fill this when you drain the rear portion you will burn your x-fer up
the A340H has 3 drain plugs and 2 fill holes
one in the tranny pan
one in the x-fer pan
and one in the x-fer case rear very very back bottom.
the fill hole for the tranny is the usual thru the dipstick.
the fill for the rear portion of the x-fer case is above and right of the rearmost drain. aprox the same location of a manual x-fer case fill hole. ill post pics tomorrow.
